Wow, I never realised the first ones had plastic connectors

It makes sense that these would have less problems, but considering how new they are I suppose we won't know if they have the same problems yet.

Have seen on xbox forums many people have had the nyko intercoolers which has caused the 360 to get the 'ring of death' Some even had it melt to the back of the 360, this seems to be because it takes power from the power lead directly in the back of the 360, and the 360 being power hungry goes wrong. Genraly speaking those that power off the usb port or that have an alternative mains supply are ok.

Well the new one is meant to prevent the melting problem, and it only happened if you didn't have it plugged in properly.

I'm not so sure the complain about drawing power can cause problems, since it draws hardly anything, and power bricks usually are capable of producing more power than the console usually needs.

yea but the usb connection still draws power from the 360 right?

Yeah but not much and no more that other expected devices on the port would do. After all it only powers a couple of fans.

umm its strange because i used the old one for a couple of months with no problem and i hardly had any freezes on my xbox 360. when my bro had problems with his xbox with the 3 red lights, i attached the cooler and it worked fine. we still sent it back for repair has it was still under warranty.

its strange how people say it draws too much power has its only powering 3 small fans has stated by the above user. doesnt connecting an ipod or a mem stick draw just as much power on the 360?

Your taking power from a completely different part of the console, your drawing 5v dc and not taking out of the power brick which has upset the console as it lowers the voltage before it goes through conversion to dc.
Some people have even been advised be MS that if thier 360 is in an extension lead with other plugs to try thier 360 in a mains socket by itself as the other items connected can create voltage fluctuations going into the 360.
Genrally speaking the 360 is very suseptible to any changes in the input voltage. so it's best not to fidle with it.

No it doesn't, it comes in after the power brick, so it's after the conversion to dc, and all power sockets have varying voltages and currents, systems are (or at least should) be designed with that in mind. I hear a lot of manufacturers give bull**** about a bad power supply to the unit invalidating the warranty, that it's your fault the item died because your electricity supply is ****. It's bull to keep them from having to pay up.

    You misunderstood my post!
I was talking about the difference between the usb powered coolers and the nyko one's!
When the power goes in it is coverted on lots of different rails for different places and these dc rails are kept separate so a large pull on one will not affect the others.
If you take power from the brick before it goes in to the 360 your limiting the voltage before it is converted and it will mean all the voltage rails will struggle to keep the voltage up.
Surly all power sockets are 240v AC @13A, If any comany tried saying otherwise they would quikly have egg on face!
