    Optical Audio Output

ive just noticed now that after 4 years my PS2 has a Digital/Optical out at the back. is this the "standard" optical output that you connect to your surround sound receiver? has anyone tried this or heard of it? will the sound improve? or do we need to bother with it?

Yes it is a standard optical out. If you connect it to a surround sound reciever you will get Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound and DTS if the game or DVD support it.

I use it. The only game that I own with proper surround sound is GTA:VC which uses DTS. Nearly everything else uses crappy Pro Logic II.

my 5.1 surround supports Dolby Digital, Pro Logic and DTS. if i connect it to my PS2 what "sound" would it emit? or like you said depends on what type of sound the game support?

it will be exactly the same as you get from the stereo outputs, just in digital and in one of the surround formats where applicable. So every you you get now, you will continue to get over optical

yep, you just get the regular stereo output from it. Just like any a regular DVD player.
