A bit disappointed by Super Paper Mario
After reading several positive reviews of SPM, I decided to buy it and see what it was all about, but to be honest, I just can't seem to see what all the fuss is about.
Getting past about (what seemed like) 10 minutes of a not particularly interesting text-based introduction storyline, the initial wow-factor of the 2D to 3D flipping kept me interested in the game for about half an hour, but once the novely of that had worn off, the game just seemed to be frustratingly slow, with lots of going back and forth all the time without any of the usual mario-standard "pick up and playability".
So am I experiencing what a lot of people think, am I being impatient, or am I just rubbish at the game? :)
Thankfully I bought it off ebay, so if I do sell it, I won't be down too much money if I do sell it, but before I do, does it get a bit more interesting as it goes along, or is it all pretty much the same?

Personally I'm enjoying it but it is a slow paced game. There are, in finest mario tradition, a truck load of secrets to discover and a fair amount of in-jokes. Didn't think there was too much back tracking to be honest - not to just get on with the main thread - and there are some good uses of the 2d / 3d flip. I'm about half way through at the moment and am still enjoying it - even though I've never liked the portable Mario RPGs (Mario & Luigi Partners in Time, etc) this one has kept me interested.

i think mike, this genre is too slow for you now...
i used to like mario too but now i think i am over it
Re: A bit disappointed by Super Paper Mario
I have to say I was rather disappointed with this one as well.
While I personally don't think it's as bad as Mike made out, in my opinion it's not a patch on thousand year door.
So far I've got 6 of the hearts (so a good way into the game), and it just seems far to linear. The 2D/3D flipping thing doesn't really seem to have been properly integrated into the game (particularly on the later levels), and a lot of the time flipping into 3D just reveals a big empty expanse, with all the backdrop painted along one wall.
Maybe I'm missing something, but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of any side quests either (aside from collecting cards and recipes).
Anyway, it's kept my attention, but all-in-all a bit of a let down really. I certainly can't see me replaying it, so it's probably going on ebay as soon as I finish it.
Re: A bit disappointed by Super Paper Mario
I loved this game so much! and i really didnt have much interest in the old paper mario games but I really enjoyed this one alot more.
Re: A bit disappointed by Super Paper Mario
It really was an utter chore to finish. The level with the nerd lizard was utter brilliance, I don't think the rest raised a smile.
The GC and N64 RPGs were much better unfortunately.
Re: A bit disappointed by Super Paper Mario
I didn't get it either. Really disappointed. The hype reminded me of 'the emporors new clothes'. Luckily I had rented it off Lovefilm and could return it sharpish.
Re: A bit disappointed by Super Paper Mario
I thought it was dull as anything, eventually played it through to completion, even had a go on the pit of a hundred trials but got killed on about 64 :(

Re: A bit disappointed by Super Paper Mario
I'm still playing my way through it, I've had it for months now but it's just not as addictive as other games that have come out and snatched my attention... Paper Mario on the Gamecube was overall better, at least the story made some sense!
Re: A bit disappointed by Super Paper Mario
This thread gets resurrected more times than... erm...
...anyway yes. What I never mentioned in this thread was that I traded it in for Super Mario Galaxy a few days after posting the initial message and didn't look back :)
Re: A bit disappointed by Super Paper Mario
Now thats a game worthy of your pennies ;)
