Changing xbox live gamer tag

If i change my Gamer Tag, do i need to get all my buddies to change it at their end or does it do it automatically?

Don't quote me on this, but I think that when you go through the process to change it, it will give you an option to send a message to your friends list. This will tell them that you are changing your tag and will tell them the new one.

However, it's totally down to them to add you again, or you to add them.

I'd expect to lose some of the friends on your list that you don't really meet up with that often.

actually, iirc, it's automatic. i've seen some people suddenly have new names in my friends list

You don't have to reinvite all your old friends, your gamertag will simply update itself in all your friends friends list. However, I would send a message to let your friends know you're changing your gamertag (and what the new one will be) as it can get confusing knowing who's who otherwise, especially in large lists...

To change your name it will cost 800 MS points.

Once you have changed your name all of the friends on your friends list will just see your updated name - providing they have authorised the friend request previously.

I changed my Gamertag last year and, yes, it cost MS points (i.e. money!) and the change was propagated to my friends automatically.

800 points is to pay for the massive amount of administration that goes into it. They obviously have to change every bit of information in your account and your friends account by hand. And this involves at lest 2 dozen people at a time.
