I think my Xbox 360 is about to die!

Recently my Xbox 360 has been freezing more and more frequently. I only play Rainbow Six Vegas so i'm not sure if it's the game causing the freezing or the hardware itself (through overheating). I suspect the latter. Sometimes it locks up completely 2-3 times in an hour. There are no warning lights, just a complete freeze where I have to power cycle it.

What options do I have when it finally dies? Do I get it repaired and, if so, what is the process for that? Or should I buy one of the newer ones if these have solved the problem of overheating? I'm not that bothered about buying a new one but if I did then how would I transfer what's on the 20GB hard drive of my current one over to the new one?

rainbow 6 was fairly buggy if I recall and crashed mine a few times as well.

No other game affects it, just vegas and especially the "joining" screen.

Sounds similar to mine before it died. Started a race on Forza, froze for about 3secs every 5-10seconds then the next day I got the RRoD.

It's a couple of years old now so way outside of the warranty period.

If it's regular lock up then you should be ok to send it back, if it's intermittent, you risk sending it in for them to say no fault found.

I wouldn't worry about warranty too much as MS extended the warranty due to the rrod... give em a call and see what they say.

If its close to dying, just leave it on the dashboard overnight (or try looping a DVD if that won't crash it). It'll make it 3ROD quicker.
Remember - the extended warranty only covers you against the 3ROD, nothing else

Hey, this is happening to me too, although it only seems to happen in RB6 online. Although to be fair i have been playing that game alot in anticipation of Vegas 2 coming out in march.
I bought mine in Nov 2006, is that one of the first batches?

have you tried any of the third party coolers you can buy, my brother owns the xbox 360 elite, and he bought 1 that has 3 30mm fans on it and it clips right onto the back and pulls air out of the machine, the air coming out of it is always very hot also, worth a shot if you have around £25 ($49) to spend.
it should also extend the life of the newer xbox 360s if it keeps it cooler

you could also try putting it on top of some kind of grill platform, this could help with cooling.
