MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
It came from Ballmer's own sweaty chops :)

Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
i would be a nice add on, if they did decide to go that way in the end. but somehow i cant see m/soft wanting to pay royalties to sony, but i'm pretty sure that their going to have to incorperate BD into their next console.

if it will make m$ money they will do it.

Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
They will need bigger storage just for the games alone on their next console, and given that Bluray is the only real option now, its almost certain :)
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
I think with the format war over. Microsoft will have to add BD or they will loose sales to Sony on that alone.

They may need more storage, but MS won't be making games on Blu-ray for this generation. All that would happen would be confusion in the gaming world. Games on DVD & Blu-ray, 360 Arcade/Pro/Elite/ElitePro? How to screw up the market in one easy mode.

For their next console, not the 360 :)
Should have made that a bit clearer.

With respect, I'm not so sure. I'd hazard a guess that there'll be an "add-on" drive, similar to the 360's HD-DVD drive.
It would almost certainly be external, like the current HD-DVD option. That wouldn't really attract me - I'd rather have a BR drive in my PC, given time. I like the crispness/sharpness (if they're words) of my LCD monitor compared to even LCD-TVs, and (edit) you can set things how you like with computer players, and there are so many to choose from: MPc (with appropriate codecs), CL PD7.3, WMP11, VMC/MCE, VLC-mp, etc.
If I were in the market for a BR player, and saw this add-on player at a reasonable price (around £100), and I already had a 360 (which I don't, at least not yet,) it would be worth considering, I suppose.
I do agree with you that their "next-gen" product (XB-720? lol) will have to support a "next-gen" format (probably blu-ray, but could still be UVD in theory), with backwards compatibility, or it will not sell.

Thats exactly what I just said, lol :)

Will it though? The cost of R&D of the drive/software isn't insubstantial and the point of the 360 is gaming not HD playback. BD standalone players will drop below the three figure mark too soon to make it that appealing for MS to do the addon (and sell it for reasonable profit) IMHO.
Sony will continue to make big noises about how gaming absolutely needs 50gb discs but the reality is rather different.

its not too much effort to get up and change a disc :)

it isn't much effort to change a disc but i would have preferred my lost odyssey to be 1 disc instead of the 4 it is.
i dont ccare what we use but discs with more storage are needed

Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
I dont care what the games come on but it would be nice if they started caching some of the game data to the hard drive in the 360 instead of having to wait for it to load from the damned CD, the bigger games get the more time your going to be sat waiting for the cd...
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
if the developers are clever you wont have to wait that long, the throughput of the DVD isn't bad at all, the problem is too many are been quick n cheap about it, not laying out the data in a clever way, thinking if someone is here, they might well need this data because odds are they will do this.....
is a bit of an art, but it can be done.
Alternatively they could just design a console with bucket loads of RAM.
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
meh, does that mean a new xbox to play blu-ray?

you could have the devil-may-cry-4 20-minute install!
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
They have to add blue-ray to the next re-incarnation of the x-box 360 probably 360 v3 or whatever they are upto now, will be before end of year. But no doubt cost more.lol
Would make no sense not to, as I'm sure a large part of the market is waiting for it.

You only have MS to blame for this, they decided that the 360 must come in different flavours, with & without hdd. All games have to run without hdd involved, yes there are some minor exceptions (FFXI)

The market is not waiting for a Blu-ray equipped 360. All it will do is confuse the market even more, with/without Hdd. With/without Blu-ray, DvD/Blu-ray games (both would need to be supported). Makes a complete mockery of what a games console should be. Simple!
The only time it makes sense to use Blu-ray will be in the next generation.

Yeah but how hard would it be for the game to check if space is available and then use it if its there?

Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
i'd still like to see an addon drive for movies that is reasonably cheaper than a stand alone blu ray player :) much like the hddvd drive was
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
An addon drive would be nice. I say it would HAVE to have really good upscaling tech or i'd jsut get a proper dedicated bluray player.

I seem to use my PC for everything, so I'll just get a "HD" drive for the PC, given time.
I was initially going to get a combined BR/HD-D Drive for my PC (which I watch all my movies on), but now HD-DVD is dying out, I'll just wait till RE Blu-Ray drives come down in price a bit (about £70-80 preferably), then dive in.
With (excellent) programs like PowerDVD on the PC, I don't see the need, personally, for any other hardware.
I feel the same way about the 360 I should add. My brother was trying to get me playing his 360 today, but I couldn't get on with the controller.
I appreciate it's likely just personal choice, combined with a "minimalist" attitude (one "piece of junk" is easier to look after), but I prefer
- gaming on the PC (with my Logitech Trackball and Microsoft WED8000/Belkin N52 keyboard(s))
- watching movies on my PC (using CyberLink & (small) HD Screen)
- listening to music on PC (using WMP11 & S750 speakers)
Anyway, that's majorly off topic.

Re: XBOX360 Blu-Ray Support?

"Was" is right... 'coz it certainly ain't expensive now!
I've seen 'em with two HD-DVD's (in GameStation IIRC?) for just £25 :)
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
im all for the HD dvds atm cus of the price personally i wont b using the blu ray cus of the prices
Viva Pinata 2 ftw
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
It's a pity MS didn't make use of the HD-DVD drive for games even if Movie companies had given up on HD-DVD. Would have solved the space issue.
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
It would have to be in a brand new console, not a 360 refresh, this would alienate their gamers already even further. So maybe XBox 3? Lets hope they get their heat problems and RROD sorted for the next one.

Kinda of an issue with production of the actual HD-DVD disks stopping ;)

Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
microsoft will never support blu ray movies through the 360, because they want people to buy movies via the xbox live store
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
It will take ages to download an HD movie and even then it will be heavily compressed.

The 720p ones they have on there run to about 5-6GB and dont take long to download. They actually dont look at all bad! Infact I was quite impressed with the quality compared to SkyHD.
Still a bit too expensive though and the 24 hour re-watch period is tight.
Butuz

I could believe that if they never produced a HD-DVD drive for the 360.
I would expect that Microsoft are already working on a BluRay equivalent.

Not too long to wait for that now.
Games could still be hd-dvd or ms should start making games on 1"" hard drives or solid state when a lot cheaper. Ooh like a cartdridge.
Compression on Zelda O O T for N64 cart was immense.

360 Games use compression on their disks too.

I hope they compensate me for the HD-DVD drive they made me purchase last year... Grrrrrr :(

Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
Wasn't there something on this in Hexus News?
If I get the time I'll try and find it and put a link in.
Here: HEXUS: Microsoft Opts for digital distribution
As someone already said on this thread, I think MS want you to download stuff. I think they were on about allowing people to install the games on the HDD.
And Doen't Blue Ray use something lie HDCP? I'm not sure what this would mean hardware wise for the 360.

They aren't
It's actually a joke at work when this crops up every time, as it will never happen :)

Best "never" to say never.

Yes you will be allowed to "Install" the games to the Hdd. But you will still need the disc in the machine to play the game. So its a bit different to digital distribution.

I've had emails at work from the UK ED&D (entertainment division and devices) at MS saying they aren't, slightly more inclined to believe them than a rumour on the internet, not to mention royalty on Blu Ray goes to a company Sony are part of
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
I think microsoft are unlikely to endure the loss of face associated with making a blu-ray 360. They'd much rather push their download service, netflix and that bt iptv thing than prop up a sony format. I think microsoft would prefer blu-ray to never succeed to the level that dvds have, instead they'd like to see content delivered over the internet, all wrapped up in nice ms drm. This is where the money is for microsoft's buisness.
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
If Microsoft do not bring out a Blue Ray disc is that so bad game wise?
The only disadvantage was for games that stream the world from the disc like GTA.
But if you install it on to the HDD, isn't reading of the HDD quicker than reading from a disc?

Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
Will only happen on 360 for VIDEO if even then(still not likely in this gen) no way will they make one for games as how will existing buyers use the new games unless Ms also put out the 50 gig BR DL onto 6.281 disc's for existing customer base.
An addon is hardly likely to play games just like the hd-dvd addon does not.
MS next console will have BR drive to play games if that is still best option at that time to play games, but It cannot happen for 360.
-
Re: MS to support Blu Ray on XBOX360?
There would have to be some chance of MS making a decent profit from it, surely. Stand alone players are cheaper now. I wouldnt be too keen on buying a £100ish BR add on when the Samsung player can be had for £160.
By the time it was made, distributed and marketted, it may not be worthwhile for MS to do it.
