    ps3 wont turn on

my ps3 will not turn on for some reason all i get is a flashing red light when i try to turn it on.

i see from a google search it looks like it might be the hdd that has gone in it as when it did turn on it said it was not shut down properly and gave a code and now it wont even turn on.

this ps3 is used very little and mostly used for the net downstairs so I'm a bit pissed off it has only lasted 3 years.

would it be worth taking it back to Curry's under the sale of goods act? as i bought my TV at the same time and that has been used day and night and that still works fine.

    Re: ps3 wont turn on

    contact sony support for repair.
did you take out any kind of extended warranty with currys.

if you think its the hard drive try sticking a spare one in it its a very simple procedure to do.

got this from somewhere else not my words

Consumers in the UK have the statutory right to be able to claim in a court of law for a period of up to six years (five in Scotland) that the goods were faulty at the time of sale or are not of sufficient durability and therefore claiming some form of compensation.

am not sure that that helps you at all. unless you know the sales of goods act inside out i suggest you get some legal advice. saracen from here is some kind of legal boff i think

    Re: ps3 wont turn on

Try disconnecting everything and leaving it to sit for a while, then power it on by holding the power button till you hear 3 beeps.

If that doesn't work try removing the HD and reinserting it, failing that not a clue.

Tbh trying to return it under the sales of goods act is never gonna work, simply because after 6months the powers revert to the shop and its down to you to prove its not faulty. So whos to say its not been on for 3 years solid and never turned off? in which case that would be a acceptable amount of use for the price you paid. Crap I know.

Your best bet like someone else said, is to contact Sony European Support. They will be able to tell you where you stand with this.

    Re: ps3 wont turn on

    Which model do you have?

a couple of my mates have had issues recenlty with their PS3's. One's board shorted and another ones drive packed up. Both were the 60gb models (as is mine).

I am quite worried these days that mine will pack up and I will need to get a new one (granted slimmer, bigger hard drive - but fewer usb ports and no mem card slots and no ps2 support (granted I don;t play many ps2 games now, but annoys we they removed features with newer versions.....surely they should add things?!?!)

the one i have is one of the first ones with a 40gb Hitachi hdd.

a quick google search shows its not if its when its going to die just glad i don't have the ylod so a new hdd should fix mine.

i did check the sn of the hdd on the Hitachi site to see if there was any warranty left on the hdd but there was none left and it never even said when the hdd went out of warranty.

I'm not sure how true it is, but Sony tech support told me that the PS3 will wipe a drive from another PS3 if you try to swap them.

I believe for the install it formats it regardless of whether it has already been used in a PS3, I seem to recall mine did that when I was testing a 2.5" drive I had. So best not borrow one from a mate.
Can you get hold of a 2.5" drive from anywhere to test?

This is indeed correct. It basically formats the drive and then matches up the HDD with the PS3 with encrypted serial codes etc. to stop you from downloading a game/video from the store and then swapping it with a mate.

I had the original 60GB phat PS3 and that died after about 3 years (YLOD) so I bought a new slim 120GB version. If it isn't the HDD there are a few companies out there that will repair your console for quite a cheap cost and if they cant will ship it back to you without charge. I found a few on ebay that seemed a good option so have a search on there

    Re: ps3 wont turn on

If it still doesnt work then by all means take it back to currys on the sales of good act stuff,

I used to work at a PC repair shop(left about a week ago) before i left we had a guy going on about the slaes of goods act and he bought his ps3 in like Nov 07, but it was still under some sort of warranty under the act, im not sure what but my manager had no alternative but to take it in and we had to have a go at a repair,

To be honest try with sony support first, but you got nothing to lose trying currys.

    Good Luck
