NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
I imagine most people have seen this but for those that haven't I think it's quite interesting.
The general opinion is that it doesn't reduce times by a great deal but I think they've missed a trick, second-wise the differences aren't massive but %-wise they seem a great deal better for the most part! HL2 seems to benefit massively but avoid like the plague for Halo3!
Eurogamer have done a comparison of load times & a few sizes- http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=290745
Bingegamer have a comparison with install sizes for loads of games - http://www.bingegamer.net/2008/so-ho...install-chart/
I'm suprised FC2 is so small but guess I still won't be installing any more than 2 games on my 20gb HDD .... :(
-
Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
Excellent links, I don't read either of thoose sites so would never have come across the articles :)
-
Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
Yeah the Eurogamer article is really good, read it a few days ago.
Problem I have is also the 20Gb hard disk. When you consider you only have around 13Gb to play with it is 2 games installation (believe the other 7 Gb is system related files and the emulator required to play XBox origionals). So for me it will most likely 1 game, which will be Fallout 3 for me. Then change to something else when I get it if I am drawn in by it.

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
I mostly enjoy how quiet the whole thing is compared to what it was :D

Aye me too :( I do mostly play one game right through before moving onto the next though, think I'm gonna have to get one of the 60GB packs for £47 & flog the bits I don't need.
I don't even want the emulator (2GB reserved!!) You should be able to remove it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911593

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
I might look into a diy yourself 120 gig upgrade. Seems to be a nightmare tracking down the 120 gig WD scorpio drives with the particular model number required though :(

Modded consoles are getting banned from live, there was a big push over the last week, best safe bet is the 60gb upgrade pack, then sell the 20gb one after you transfer game saves etc over, ends up costing £30 or so and you get some more xbl gold time

There have been a few reports though Rob. I don't have a link unfortunately, but modding a HD doesn't seem worth it.

True hexus did post an article about modding consoles. I wasnt aware the hard drive was one area of the console they look at..
I thought the hard drive upgrade kits were only for arcade / core owners??

There are lots of areas they look at, disc drive info/firmware, main console firmware, hard drive, xbox live profiles and more :)
The upgrade is intended for the arcade users but it won't stop a pro/premium user using it :)
All you will need is a HDD transfer kit V2 (V1 only works on 20-120gb, V2 does 20-60 or 120gb) and the suitable disc to insert for it, if you can source the disc (don't know if you can burn one yourself but I have the V2 transfer cable still) or use a memory card to transfer everything but it will take a long time!

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
Is it possible to use an external USB hard drive and use that as extra space on the 360? I have an external hard drive plugged in that I use to store media on, i.e. movies and music...
Ben

Think so but for music & videos only. You can't use it for downloads or installing games.

I thought you actually needed the signature from another drive which means it must be another 360 drive anyway, ie. Not a normal WD one?
It's been a while since I read up on it, so correct me if wrong :)

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
Check out support pages on xbox.com or just google it. Some stuff can be transferred, other stuff must be re-downloaded.

Why have some people got it but others havent? I'm at my aunts. I can sit around and wait, I gotta go in a bit. Why is it my console that doesnt update. Did it come through straight away or should I leave it one the dash for a bit?

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
I just booted up my 360 and as it logged into XBL it popped up the notice. Sign out and sign back in.

Still nothing tried signing in and out, leaving it restarting console, leaving it off for a bit. Two of my friends who live within a few miles of me have it For :censored: Sake!!!!! The one time I dont have my own internet connection. Grrrr!!!!

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
Yeah its more or less instant. I turned my Xbox on at like 10.03am and it took a few seconds to download, and when it restarted it took maybe 10 long seconds to update the system lol. The intro movie is very impressive! :D

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
Maybe Gold subscribers are put on some sort of priority for any of those who may be on silver? Perhaps anyway...

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
YAY!!!! Its working now!!!! :D :D :D Just downloading first update I\'m so happy.
/sad :p
-
Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
Well, was getting nothing on my main gamertag, activated my 2nd one and it found it and updated. So far installed Fallout 3 to hard drive and downloaded an avatar that puts you in with the sweepstakes thing for the MS points.
Still trying to find my way around it at the min as everything is in completely different places. Quite like it must admit though, pretty user friendly.

I also have it
Very nice :D

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
Please don't flame me as I am a PS3 user. However on both the PS2 with a HDD loader (and the legit disc mind) and on my PS3 the recent Soul Caliburs have been helped massively by HDD loading. This is largerly due to custom characters, where the developer can not predict what data I will need, when. I would imagine any customisable game would benefit from a full or partial install.
-
Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
It is quite nice; as soon as it came out we had a storm and I had to cancel the NXE update (it had already updated from the old version) and on starting the second time the update was quick.
Am just copying GoW2 to the HDD...I like it :) My avatar looks nothing like me though LOL
If you can't wait, go buy a game and get the 48 hr gold key; worked for me with the gow2's 48 hr gold license...

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
Ah it's so much nicer playing a game with the hair dryer off! Fable II's menu system is a lot nippier now it's been installed. My zero point games are now banished from my gamer history.
Have to say the new dashboard looks a whole lot better on larger displays now :)
-
Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
My 0 point games are still there, tried to remove them but you cant at all for some reason. Find it a bit bizarre that you need the disk in to play, even though the game is installed to hard drive.

Press the guide button, go to achievements and 0 point games will have the option to delete game history.

If you didn't need the disc the market would be killed by piracy.

How did you download the avatar? TIA :)

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
The Microsoft Points competition requires you to purchase downloadable content between the 19th and 23rd to be eligible for entry into a draw.

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
It was on marketplace somewhere, I was browsing and stumbled across it, its a guy with a grenn background with long brown hair giving thumbs up type thing. On the right it mentions being entered into the sweepstakes in a large body of text.

It's a free Gamerpic in the Themes and Gamerpics section under What's New on Marketplace.

Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
Anyone else wondering how to delete the intro vid? That's gotta take up some space!
-
Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
First (& only) game I installed was R6V:2, takes about 6.5gb leaving me with not enough free space to install another (I have the mirror's edge, left4dead demos installed)
Load times don't seem to have imporved hugely but the initial screen (when you choose what type of game, load games etc) is amazingly fast, biggest plus is the (lack of) noise, bliss!
-
Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
GTA IV installed - as everyone says: not much difference loading time wise but I can actually hear the game's music and sound FX now without needing to turn the telly right up to drown out the noise of the xbox's dvd drive.
-
Re: NXE: HDD game install sizes & load times.
After copying gears 2, my drive has some 94 gig free; the game took 6.4 GB. Glad I picked up the elite when I did, although at that time all the HDD space just seemed like a waste LOL :p
