Before I buy the x360 wireless accessory..

    Hi

Is there a way of going online with the xbox just by an ethernet cable between the xbox and an online pc? my router is upstairs and my wireless htpc is downstairs next to the xbox, otherwise I have to shell out for the accessory..

maybe a dumb cheap network switch/hub would work?

I am guessing your htpc has an ethernet port, if so you should be able to connect the 360 to that using a cross over cable not sure what effect it has on latency.

I'm using a crossover cable, just need to change some settings I guess.

A cross-over cable is what you need. Cheap as chips and will do the job fine, used one for ages when I first got my xbox on live.

Re: Before I buy the x360 wireless accessory..

You don't need a crossover cable for the Xbox 360. You do for the original Xbox, though. I think I read somewhere that the 360 swaps the signals around automatically. I used to have my 360 connected to my PC with a normal, straight through (Patch? Not sure what the term is) ethernet cable. I was using a USB 802.11b adaptor but it didn't work well. The signal kept dropping out while I was playing online. I would be disconnected from a game but I could still talk to people. It was annoying, so in the end I just used a long cable upstairs to a spare router.
