    PS3 40GB PS2 Game support...

Is this still never going to happen, or have Sony released a FW upgrade to enable this (or is a hardware issue?).

Want to play some PS2 titles (Tekken 5) but am not a fan of the wired controller on my PS2...

Thanks / been living under a rock "latest" tech info wise

    AFAIK, its a hardware thing.
the 40gb versions dont have the emulation chip, so unless sony go down the software route, its a no go.

didnt they disable it to keep costs down? something to do with royalties or the like?

The PS3 60GB in Japan and the US had both the CPU and GPU from the PS2. The CPU was a variation on a MIPS design so fairly easy to emulate, but the GPU was custom Sony. So the UK 60GB and jap/us 80GB removed the CPU as that wasn't too hard to emulate. It too a wee knock in compatability, but not much.

The 40GB chucked out the GPU from the PS2 and the card reader and two USBs. Personally it couldn't have hurt them that much to just keep two usbs, but I don't know if it was a case that the board could be massively simplified with just that extra removed.

Sony's GameOS division is pretty lax for such a large product. They have the same vis's in the music player for some time, no seek, a folder depth limit and a few other issues that just make the XMB not feel fully fleshed out.

I know they probably had a brain drain to Home, but I wish they would just add the odd wee tweak.

Yeah i doubt they will enable PS2 support again. If anyone is concerned that you want to play older games then try get a 60GB release model if poss. If you need to check - model no should show (Model Number: CECHC03*) on back on unit.

Since the updates nearly all my PS2 games work fine on my PS3, and gloriously upscaled as well (playing through God of war series at the mo)

Isn't it also a case that they have a chrome strip and 4 usbs on the front? apposed to 2 usbs and a matt silver strip.

    Re: PS3 40GB PS2 Game support...

The PCSX2 team seem better at emulating the PS2 than Sony... although I think that's almost certainly due to a lack of effort and caring from Sony - if PCSX2 can emulate a PS2 on a Conroe Dual Core, then I'm sure it's not beyond Sony to manage it with a 7 core chip, especially with the intimate knowledge they have of the PS2.

It won't generate any money for them, so I'm hardly surprised that they don't give a monkey.

Dunno, My friend with a HUGE PS2 collection of games had his PS2 fail recently.

He went out and bought another second hand PS2. If he could have got a PS3 that played his PS2 collection, he'd have done so.

    Re: PS3 40GB PS2 Game support...

Thanks to the info here, I just sold my 40gig PS3 for around 250 quid too I might add (it's less than 8 months old!) with MGS4/GTAIV and the spare Dualshock 3 pad (about £400 retail for the lot).

When I'm next in London, I'll probably pick up a 80gig model

I am making a very good guess, that sony will launch the slimmer, cheaper and backwards compatible PS3 with the launch of god of war III and it will shoot the ps3 sales like anything. I wish this dream comes true.

Anyone who will pay £250 for a 8 month old 40GB PS3 needs their head examined! I bought a 80GB from Game for £299 with Infamous and Ghostbusters. I have not opened the games yet and I am in 2 minds whether to sell them on ebay and recoup some of the dosh I paid for the console. You get the full years peace of mind from Sony or take out the Game-Care plan for £25 for 2 years peace of mind, it even covers accidental damage!

The only game that I'd play from the PS2 now is probably Final Fantasy X. The others are on the PS1

Touch wood the PS3 should see a good play life, my original release model (touch wood) has lasted as long as 3 xbox's i have had. I never seen that game-care plan though, if not to expensive may well be a good idea. I may well consider it when i get the ps3 slim when its out.
