    is my ps3 pants?

Hi guys, i have a ps3 which was bought mainly for its dvd / blu ray features, it makes a great player except i cant use it as one...

the reason why? its just too damn noisy!

it starts up whisper silent then gradually gets so noisy it gives the hoover a run for its money (usually happens about half way through a film or an hour or so into web browsing / gaming / anything really!!!)

i jumped onto google to see if this was normal (i thought the ps3 was meant to be quieter than the 360)

well google tells me the ps3 has a few fan speed settings (which would explain the gradual increase) and that it gets louder as its temp rises (makes sense) and that i should give it plenty of room to breathe.

so out comes the ps3 from the cabnet under my tv and onto the coffee table it goes (it has nothing around it and plenty of breathing space aswell as the window being open) and still it does it! i could smash it i really could! i assume that this cant be normal?!? surely?!?

it is covered under that continuous play sceme, do you think they'll replace it? or should i throw it down the stairs and say it stopped working? or is there a better solution?

I've not heard of this problem. I love using mine as a DVD player as it is much quieter than my 360.

What model do you have? I have the 40gb one.

No it certainly does not sound normal. From what you are saying yours sounds to have some kind of fault.

My release 60gb is whisper quiet in its cabinet when playing games/watching films - if your 360 is quieter something is most definitely wrong. I would compare my old 360 to a jet engine compared to my ps3

Saying that i have never seen/heard a 40gb model, but can not imagine it is that different to a release model?

    Re: is my ps3 pants?

TBH it is very hit and miss with the PS3 especially as they start to get a bit older. I am on the Playstation forum frequently and have read many threads complaining of loud fans. My own 60GB though was silent until it died on me last week

I do also have a 80GB that I bought a couple of months ago now but never used it (except to check it when it first arrived from Game) until my 60GB broke. It is silent also and much cooler than my original console, that thing was better than my central heating radiators LOL

    Re: is my ps3 pants?

My 40GB PS3 is very quite for 90% of the time, playing games/browsing or watching films, but evry so often something seems to get it a bit hot, and it not always after/during a long session, and then the fans startup and it really does sound like a bloody hoover.
This goes on for a couple of minutes and then they shut off, in comparison my 360 is really, really quiet, even with heavy use,(its a premium with a liteon drive).

    Re: is my ps3 pants?

Mine is loud, it's louder than my old and new 360's ever were. Mines a 40gb as well, my old 40gb unit before the blueray drive failed was also loud.

My 40gb was louder than my 360's also, then it failed and I just got rid of it.
