Unhappy Ps3 slim - Monitor HDMI > DVI black screen

    Hello,

I just bought a Ps3 Slim and wanted to use my Dell E207WFP (wich is said to support HDCP) instead of a TV.

So I bought a HDMI to DVI Cable for 40 bucks ( couldn't find a cheaper one in any store ) and when I hooked it up, this is what showed on the screen :

    Cannot Display This Video Mode
    Optimum Resolution 1680 x 1050 60 Hz

    Everything else was black.

    What I tried:

    - Holding the on/off button for 5, 10, 15 + second, but no fix.

    - Hooked it up on my TV to try to change the display settings to HDMI, but it says that it will test for 30 seconds if it is compatible, if not it will change it back.
So I tried to set it to HDMI via the controller on the monitor itself (without the screen working), but it didn't do anything.

Read alot on the internet but did not find a fix yet.
Does anyone know what to do?

    Thank you

    Hi mate,

A quick browse and I found this thread at the Dell forums...seems you've tried all the methods I could think of. How about normal vga first via AV then checking the settings in the PS XMB?

Anyhow here's the link, but it looked like this fellow didnt solve his problem???

Its probably because HDCP isn't supported through DVI on your monitor I'm afraid, if your monitor doesn't support HDCP then your out of luck im afraid

More to do with the monitor resolution than anything else. PS3 only supports 720/1080 for HD.

    edit: Or not...
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

As opposed to HDCP through the VGA port? Nope, if this monitor supports HDCP (which it does) then it'll be through the DVI port.

You might need to find a way of getting the PS3 to output display at 720p though, blind. Try letting the PS3 update it's firmware (if you can allow it to have a connection without needing to see the display )

Re: Ps3 slim - Monitor HDMI > DVI black screen

I'm also thinking about getting a PS3 and connecting it to my 22" hdcp compliant (not dell) monitor through DVI, will be interested to see how you get on. Limiting the PS3 to 720p seems to make sense as a place to start.

Re: Ps3 slim - Monitor HDMI > DVI black screen

I tried to copy the directions I need to go to setup the display settings on my TV and than tried to do it on my monitor with a black screen.

After alot of tries the screen worked, it said that it was in 720p resolution
the only thing is that it was on the "example" mode and beneath it said " will go back to original res in bla bla seconds.

So after that it went black again and I tried alot of times to bring it back "blindly" but with no luck.

There seemed to be no " Confirm " option to keep that resolution.

    I'm out of idea's really.

Re: Ps3 slim - Monitor HDMI > DVI black screen

So the settings in the PS3 XMB are set to 720 or lower... and I suppose the only way to check that at the moment to to connect your PS3 via AV to your telly. But then your probably be doing it blind cus AV dont support 720????

There's quite a few people on the net who have had problems the same as your with the same monitor.

Seems Kalniel has already rubbished this monitor over 3 years ago

So the monitor does work fine when the PS3 outputs correctly, that's a good start. Now how to get the PS3 to maintain your 720p setting.. is something which I remember seeing problems with at various press events in the past. Is the firmware updated to the latest?

There should be an option to say "if you can see this, press X", otherwise it will default back

Re: Ps3 slim - Monitor HDMI > DVI black screen

Tried out my monitor, a Cibox C2201, with my housemate's PS3 and a cable from spoon. Rather surprisingly it 'supports' 1080p despite only having a resolution of 1680X1050! Looked a lot better than 720p even if it was merging a few pixels. Just need to get myself a PS3 now
