Metal Gear Solid 4 Graphics problem?

I hear they're not the best, but pretty good. However I've just got MGS4 and the graphics look really poor.

They looks like the game is outputting in 480p rather than HD, the seems to look more like PS2 level graphics. Nothing like the sharp visuals of all the other games I got.

I've messed around with the PS3 settings changing between 1080i and 720p and neither seem to make any difference.

Also the PS3 hasn't asked me to download any patch or update for the game. Has anyone had any issues like this?

I played MGS4 on a friend's console a while back and the graphics seemed pretty good IMO, I don't think they would be confused with PS2 anyway. Check the game settings - some games let you pick between a lower resolution with high frame rate, or a high resolution with lower frame rate - the output to the TV should be the same resolution due to up-scaling but the rendering resolution should change.

I'm fairly sure there was a large patch for MGS4 but it was for MGS Online content, nothing to do with graphics. It's been a long time since I put it in a PS3 for the first time though so my memory may not be all too reliable... It's running the install for the first chapter before you start playing though right?

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4 Graphics problem?

I've done the install a couple of times, and nothing has changed. The cutscenes look right, but the gameplay doesn't.

Perhaps I'm just judging it too harshly and unfairly comparing it to Uncharted 3.

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4 Graphics problem?

TBH i never thought MGS4 looked that great. Whilst playing through it the first part always struck me as GRAW/GRAW2 with a different playable character in terms of graphics.

Edit: I believe the game is sub-720p anyway.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

MGS4 in game graphics weren't that great but they shouldn't look too awful. To be honest it's been ages since I played it though. Probably harsh to compare it to Uncharted considering the release of MGS was closer to the beginning of the PS3.

Its been a while since I played MGS, but from what I remember the in game graphics looked okay to me. You sure its not a setting or something that needs changing.
