xBox Live points to be phased out by the end of 2012

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2399281,00.asp

Apparently Microsoft is to move away from xBox Live points for purchasing add-ons, and the speculation is they'll use some form of micro-payments system.

Shame, as I usually found the points cheaper than RRP, so in effect getting a discount on the bits purchased - this is unlikely to be possible with micro-payments. It also means registering a credit/debit card for content, or I presume, iTunes style pre-payment cards?

    Exactly.

My card details are already linked to my xbox live account, so this will be a nice improvement for me

Re: xBox Live points to be phased out by the end of 2012

Like most of the posters in this thread I too am stuck with a piddly amount of points that was left over from a purchase I made. Not enough to buy anything "useful" but I guess that was the aim of the exercise from the start

What happens to peoples point balance when they do swap over? Will i get 5 and a half pence credit or something?

Re: xBox Live points to be phased out by the end of 2012

Although it is annoying having left over points, the other day I got 4200 for £25. The rest of the time I pay at least £5 less than Microsoft's RRP. I don't see this happing in future if points are replaced... it seems that it's the way gaming is going these days. More and more power is being taken from us by manufacturers and publishers. With points, I can accept it almost but what about when the same happens for games?

I really think we should get refunds for remaining points...

For the record, I agree that Xbox Live Points were a much cheaper way of getting DLCs - I remember getting Undead Nightmare for Red Dead Redemption for way cheaper than anyone was selling the disc for!

I have some remaining points on my account, I'd better get some cash in return if this happens!

Maybe they will give you some useless avatar item to make up for your loss!

I guess this also means the end of the XBL sub scratchcard? I usually pay 30 quid for mine, don't fancy paying a tenner extra.

    Damn you Gates/Ballmer/Sinofsky!

Hated Xbox points, they were made so you always had to buy way over whatever you wanted to purchase. I prefer just paying in dosh
