Not many octo-core desktops around at the moment though. Or is the Dual-Core Bulldozer still a half and half solution, rather than a genuine dual core?

I suspect it would be a Piledriver based machine in reality.

It does not sound that weak to me TBH. Something like an FX8350 is actually around SB or IB Core i5 level(or slightly less) for games which use newer multi-threaded engines, and is probably quicker than a Core i7 920 in those cases too. Those newer engines have been designed with consoles in mind too as they are multi-platform.

If the specifications are true,I suspect it might the consoles use a derivative of the 65W TDP Opteron 3380,which is a 8 thread CPU running at between 2.6GHZ to 3.6GHZ, and single thread performance is probably far above that of the 3.2GHZ in-order Cell BE used in the PS3.

    Re: PS4 Dev kit specs

Dev kits are often very different to the actual console, and are usually based around off-the-shelf hardware available at the time, before final production silicon is ready. This IMO doesn't disagree with the 8 Jaguar core rumours.

I wonder what they mean by R10xx GPU? Assuming it's used as a GPU series name like R700 was, it would imply Southern Islands.

Edit: Following links back through Kotaku led to this: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df...xt-gen-console

exited about this but it sounds like a weak ish pc, or a mid range one. the leaks could be fake or the guy has been deliberately told to leak to get excitement up thus gain more interest

Consoles have generally used different ISA, so hard to compare, but rarely came close to gaming PCs of the time, and I really don't think there's anything surprising or unreasonable about the rumoured specs for these systems. You can't cram hardware with a total TDP of over 500W, like a high-end PC, into a relatively tiny platform, and expect to have decent reliability or costs.

Indeed that's why I think Jaguar is a far better fit than PD. I don't understand all these people going on about 1.6GHz being a limiting factor: yes single threaded performance is important for PC games but with consoles developers are meant to optimise and write for a console's architecture. 1.6GHz-2.0GHz Jaguar would use a tiny fraction of the power PC cores would - leaving a large power budget for the graphic card.
