Can you use a PS4 on a 1080i tv?

hi guys bit confused I was under the impression I needed a 1080p tv to use a ps4 is this bs? the internets saying it'll just be downscaled where the games are 1080P just want to get the white one TESCO have on offer online with destiny. and then when I can afford a 4k do that.
so can anyone confirm if I buy a ps4 I can use it on my 1080i tv?

You can from what I have read as long as your TV has HDMI.

However, I have also read that it runs better and gives a smoother image if you set it to 720p. Still images look better in 1080i but when gaming 720p gives a better smoother image / experience.
