Noisy PS3 Slim

My PS3 slim 320Gb sounds like an aircraft carrier taking off when it gets hot (even when it's just playing Blu-rays, so not much processing going on), so I've thought about maybe cleaning the fans out and generally de-dusting it, is this a pain to do? I was also thinking of putting a bigger disk in, or an SSD, but I might not bother if it's a real pain. Or I might just get a PS3 super-slim, there's a few knocking around quite cheap.

Anyone any recommendations? I'd rather not dive into PS4 yet, I've still got loads of PS3 games I've bought but not finished yet...

I've had one apart before to try and fix a yellow light of death and it wasn't too bad. You'll need a Torx screwdriver, I had one as part of a little socket set. A good guide here: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Play...+Teardown/1121

Re the hard disk, these just slot out of the front. It'd be worth reading around the internet before you invest in an SSD, I'm sure I've read somewhere it doesn't actually speed things up (but that might be the PS4 or just my bad memory).

I've got some SSDs lying around so there wouldn't be any extra expense there, just need to check how much data I'm using on my current drive before deciding if it would be a good step...

I think I've got a torx screwy somewhere as well, just need to find it...


Edit: Security Torx? Not sure I've got any of them...

Hmmm, yeah maybe I did buy a special screwdriver for it or had one from taking apart a phone previously? Looking at the socket set on Halfords they aren't security torx heads.

start with a vacuum cleaner and don't take it apart

then maybe a can of compressed air into it and see the dust fly!

I opened mine up a while back due to it being noisy, was pretty clean inside, I think the bearings need a bit of grease on them. Mind you it is put away at the minute as my PS4 takes pride of place.

Vacuum, Compressed air and then try the fan trick thingy.

I seem to recall it involves holding eject while turning the power on at the wall (or at the switch for the older models) it spins the fans backwards at full pelt for a few second to assist cleaning off the dust.

Same thing happened to my one. I ended up having to take it apart to get rid of all the dust.

My cousin has a ps4 and it sounds like a plane. so clearing the dust should help?

If you console sounds like a jet engine, and is out of warranty, you should consider opening it up and cleaning all the dust. It will make a massive difference.

Open and dust it out, those things collect dust in no time
