    Wii Gamecube Compatability Issues?

    Hello All,

Recently, in light of not being able to get any decent Wii games until about a months time, I finally realised that I could get some old Gamecube games.

I went out and got a generic controller from GAME, only because all the second hand ones were in such crap condition and they wanted £25 for a new one. Anyway, along with that, I got Resident Evil 4, which is meant to be one of the best GCN games along with SSX3 (Only because it was £6).

Anyway, got back and tried them out. SSX3 first and it worked fine, even has a WS mode, which is a good thing. So I moved onto RE4, which I've heard good things about. I start a game, and i watch the prologue. Then, when that is over, it starts to load the game 'proper' - which is when i get a "Unable to read game disc etc" message.

Bummer. I take the disc out and it really is pristine on the back, and i mean that, even for second hand, there isnt one mark at all on it. I try about a gazillion times but no dice. Went in to return it to the shop today and try and get a replacement, but theres no more. Shame.

This leads me to my question (YES, there IS one here!) have any of you had any probs with the compatability. I'm wondering whether the problem i had was with the game disc itself or with the Wii and the way it deals with GCN discs.

Have i just been unlucky? I'm thinking twice about getting RE4 online anywhere in case this is a Wii thing and then its a pain trying to return it again - at the moment I'm going to have to wait for another second hand copy to turn up - or maybe shell out for a new version.

    Thoughts please!

    JP

As far as I was aware the wii is basically just an overclocked gamecube, i.e. it has pretty much the same hardware in it as the cube did. Can't see why there would be any compatibility issues, although I oculd be wrong. I only have the windwaker and that works fine.

I've not had any probs so far. I bought a (supposedly new) copy of 1080 from Game which was scratched to buggery and it played fine.

Depends on what you mean - if you mean can the wii play gamecube games then the answer is YES, it has the ability to, but when you say "Like RE4" do you just mean that game as an example or because RE4 is different in some way to the other gamecube games??? Anyway, will have to amuse myself with SSX3 until then.

As in my original post, you can play GC games, but i'm just having trouble with a copy of RE4 that I bought (and subsequently returned).

Jonathon, there should be no issues with playing Resident Evil 4, return the disc and get it from somewhere else. Resident Evil 4 is playable on the Wii.

Well got my wave bird today, gonna test it with the Wii tonight, and I also won an ebay aution for another copy of RE4, so hopefully I'll fair better with this copy. Fingers crossed!!!!

    JP

    **UPDATE**
Got the copy, which as it happens seemed to be in worse condition than the near-pristine copy i bought second hand on the high street. This didnt fill me with great confidence, but put it in, fired up the wavebird, pressed start, watched the 'Loading' word in the bottom corner.... and was greeted with the start of the game. Woo Hoo!!! So it works and it must have meant that I had a duff version before - Just relieved because I thought that something was up with my Wii.

On a tangent - the game itself seems ok - need to hook it up to a decent speaker system and then play it late at night methinks, but i keep wishing that i could pull the view back a little bit. It just seems a *little* too near to Leons shoulder - but maybe I'll get used to it - just played into the village, so not really that far - going to start playing properly on it when i complete Zelda first!

PS - Get a wavebird, its soooo worth it!

I enjoyed it a lot although I prefer Resident Evil 3 as the later parts of the game seem very rushed and comparatively ugly to the earlier parts of the game.

I Like all of the main Resident Evil games and so recommend you get Resident Evil Zero and the Resident Evil Remake as well.

I loved all the resi evil games, have Zero, remake of 1 (v. well done) and 4 on the cube. Since the copies of 2 & 3 on the cube werent re-made just ported from the dreamcast versions I didnt bother as I have both of them on Dreamcast
