    Backward compatibility list RELEASED

    http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/bcGames.htm

Games are rated from 3/3 "perfect" to 1/3 "noticeable issues i.e. sucks hard", or not listed at all

List is smaller than it seems, as there are multiple duplicate entries for different-region or reprint games (e.g. Singstar is listed 7 times)

    Gran Turismo 3 and 4 - 2

    Grand Theft Auto:SA - 1

    Nice one!

All the older GTA games are rated a 3 yet the newer ones, obviously made after the release of the PS3, are rated a 1.

    Smells like greed to me.

    Still undecided...

Does Final Fantasy VII's absence from the list mean that it can't be played at all?

Probably. Make sure you phone up Sony and ask why they decided to remove hardware compatability for Europe, and charge more as well.
    They'll probably say:
"To ensure game playing compatability with PS2 games as we advertised as one of the strengths of the PS3, all you need to do is buy another accessary for it. The PS2 accessary for the PS3 allows full PS2 compatability, and all in an external sleek black box. Available from leading retailers for around £100."

    here's something to try

work out the compatibility score of all your ps2 games, from 3 (fully supported) to 0 (unlisted), then take an average

    average for my 24-game ps2 collection: 1.375

for contrast, rating xbox games on 3 (works fully) to 0 (doesn't work), my xbox collection of 7 games scores 2.14

I wonder if some of those clever chip designers will make a chip for hacking the PS3 and make it more backward compatible. It does not usually take them long to work around something if there is money to be made.

To put it another way, 1,782 titles are listed as being backward compatible, of the 2,451 PS2 titles which have been released in Europe.

Thats 72% compatibility, i'll reserve judgement on what 2* and 3* actually means.

But to be honest i'm not that bothered, when i got my PS2 i thought backward compatibility was awesome. Not a single PS1 game has ever been played on my PS2.

Oh dear, aren't Sony making a total mess of everything recently. Didn't they promote backwards compatibility as a big plus when the PS3 was originally announced.

    yes

middling backward compatibility doesn't matter - promising 99% and delivering 36% does (i'm not reserving judgement on what the different ratings mean, considering 3* is awarded to games which can't play FMV, won't do 60Hz anymore, can't play online, and you can't leave anything plugged into usb whilst playing them)

    sony over-promise and under-deliver
