Networked video player for Divx etc

    Hi,

I have a central server which stores video from various sources and in various formats including Divx, AVI, MPEG.

I was wondering if there are any small or cheap network capable devices which could provide access and playback of the files over the network and output to my telly (HD would be good but not essential).

I do not currently need any other capability from the device (i.e. storage, tuners, dvd etc) and thought there might a thrifty gismo which would do the job.

Something like the Kiss DP600 Hi Definition Media Player but hopefully a bit cheaper.

    Any ideas?

Cheapest way to do it is using a modded xbox (original type). The software I use is xbox media centre
    http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/
You can run a softmod, or I went the mod chip method. It plays every file format I throw at it, and will even handle an iso stored on a network drive. You should be able to pickup the xbxo for £30, think my mod chip was £40, but you can softmod them.

Thanks Flib, certainly cheap and very cool. Worth considering but I was hoping for something a bit slimmer which I can fit in my telly cabinet!

    Cheers

You can do it without opening the box and they aren't messy

I have a Netgear MP115, which unfortunately is no longer for sale but they have made newer, better versions now. Mine does the job and cost about 100 quid about 2 years ago.

    Try this one:

    It's 140 quid.

    Good one, thanks

I might wait for the Linksys Kiss 1600 release as it looks like it will fit the bill perfectly.

try the hauppage media mvp(which is now wireless). Plug it into your tv and you have access to video, music & photos.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Looks exactly what I'm after, and supports divx. Will have a look at running this over a couple of homeplugs on my network.

    Thanks

Think the MVP has to have a resonably beafy rif doing the transcoding if its divx, I have a wired one and my old athlon rig cant transcode it.

Yep, I've bought an upgrade for our media server, X2 Athlon 4600 w 2 Gb RAM. I've read the same thing but hopefully this should be enough welly to handle the signal processing side even for Divx.

I'm planning to forget the wireless option and use Homeplug to try and get a more consistent connection speed, my wireless is OK but can fade in and out a bit at times.

Should have mentioned I have the wired MVP and the Xbox, havent bothered with MVP since I chipped the box. Main reason is that its a lot easier to get xbmc to output how you want, rather than how it wants. Also having 5.1 dig output to my amp is a bonus. Only addition I want to make is a LCD unversal remote, you cant get xbox media remotes for love or money.

xbox 360 is due to receive a firmware upgrade soon to enable mpeg4 and h.264 support, could be worth considering as it allows network streaming will play high bitrate HD files and you can get a core machine for £150.

I would suggest the XBMC if you are after a Kiss player without the price tag
