    Very silly projector question

Sorry for what is probably a very silly question. But when using a prjector for TV, how is the signal run through it? OD you plug a arieal straight in or is there another way?

Also do I have to look for a certain typr of projector? Looking to buy second hand as want to keep cost down a bit.

    Cheers guys!!

You will need some sort of TV Tuner to output S-Video / Component video to the projector.

There might be some projectors with tuner built in, but mine certainly doesn't

I've not seen any projectors with TV tuners in them.

There should be loads of different connection options though. They usually have VGA, composite, s-video, components and now DVI and HDCP. So basically everything but a tuner.

If you want TV on it, get a Freeview set top box, or a VHS recorder. Tune the VHS to the analogue TV and then hook it to the projector with s-video or composite.

I think there are a few all-in-one projectors with tuners built in, but they don't tend to be great performers. Usually have speakers/DVD etc built in too and are only SD. More a convenience choice than a performance one.

What are you planning on using it for, a total TV replacement, or more occasional use ? Do you have a screen already ? Looking for HD ?

Sorry for the questions but I've been doing alot of PJ research lately so I may be able to help

There's a dedicated forum on DLP and LCD projectors over at www.avforums.com. I learnt loads there before buying my excellent Sanyo Z3. Was going to spend no more than £400, ended up spending £890 which was a bargain for that model (replaced by Z4 now) and very happy.

Have a serious think why you're going to use it, because they're not great replacements for a telly if you're going to watch it often, they're better to be used when you want to watch something more special, like a game, film or big sport thing, than Eastenders...

That said, when it's on we watch all sorts on it. And no, I've never heard of a projector with a tuner in it, and you'd be mad to put an analogue signal through one. Freeview boxes are no more than £30 in places anyway...

    Hi,

I'll back up what dancingmat says about analogue through modern projectors, it's simply not a good idea. I have used a projector for over 10 years, starting with 3 tube CRT, then moving to LCD and finally now using SXRD, I have never seen analogue look good through digital projection, only my old 3 CRT projector looked good, but that had a whole raft of problems itself.

Consider what you'll be using it for, is it for DVD's, gaming or off air sport? Do you use freeview in your area?

Once you know the answers to these questions you can make some informed decisions. What are you leaning towards in terms of technology, LCD, DLP or SXRD? What kind of budget are you looking at and what size of screen are you aiming for?

    Best wishes,

    Dave
