Anybody in here like/hate Shakespeare

I just do not understand why he is considered so vital to English Literature...

I shall await your replys BEFORE I launch into a scathing attack on such drivel....

and by all means defend the old boy....muchos respect must go to such a famous bloke, famous and loved for SO LONG...

but WHAT is he on about? I mean......gawd....WHAT...

personally believe the way every kid at school is forced to analyse it is bloody stupid - shakespear wrote to please a croud and make some money - not so we could decide whether macbeths love of goatpr0n was because of a repressed desire to shaft his mother

I too can't understand what the old fool dribble's on about most of the time, but some real good stuff has come of his work!

Romeo & Juliet (the one with Leo DiCaprio) is one of my favourite films, but the language gets me at some points...

I've also seen the Entire Works of Shakespeare at the theatre, wow, how funny!! They had the whole crowd in stiches! Well worth going to see.

Your point about how is he so vital to the English language when it's not proper english is so true! What's that all about??

Although he was obviously on hallucinogenic drugs, he was obviously a pioneer in Renaissance performing arts. His works are quite possibly a modern day teenagers worst GCSE nightmare, in terms of study, just because the language is so dissimilar to modern day dialect. However, in terms of teaching children the art of poetry, without teaching poetry - Shakespeares theatrical works do offer some rather good examples.

To put it shortly - I like some... the rest is just poo.

I TRIED last night to watch Mel Gibson's Macbeth.....I tried so hard....Sair loves it, and we'd had dinner out and it was her birthday so I thought....

"Better try for her....keep quiet and try to get a handle on it"

YEAH...right......I'm a Mel Gibson fan and he was one of the only good points....

but even HE could not hold my attention...it was utter gobble-di-gook....utter drivel.

I mean..lets not beat around the bush here....it was like READING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE and only understanding every 20th word.....

it is in no ORDER......it is quite possibly the most badly worded rubbish I have ever heard....I have also tried to read Shakespeare and it leaves me NUMB.....I literally lose the will to see it....

Its like...... illiteracy....its like it must be for people who cant see words.....cant make them form in there mind...

Shakespeare touches only one nerve....pure anger Pure hatred for what is MEANINGLESS old rubbish. Utter old tosh. Non sense in its wildest and most meaningless form.

I am still seething now...and its 12 hours ago.

I am ETERNALY GRATEFULL to my school (Chesham High School) for NOT having William on there list for my O levels.....I mean...I didn't like having to tear every one of Charles Dickinsons words into bits but I DID understand it and have since read bits and pieces.....he made SENSE.

That the one by the Reduced Shakespear Company? That version is just brilliant, totally cracked me up. Its the only Shakespear kids should have to put up with in school!

I've only ever read Romeo + Juliet and Macbeth (in school), lots of respect to the guy, his style is often v witty and the stories are timeless. However due to most of the language it's not something I'd read for leasure.

I like some of his work, but the langauge used can be a barrier.

My favourite is Richard III. I love the whole idea of the tortured soul haunted by his wrong-doings. It's all a big lie of course, Richard III wasn't the monster he's portrayed as, but it's still a good story.

His comedies aren't very funny at all though.

Somebody should translate his stories to modern times, might be OK then.

Maybe somebody has.

As for me, Shakespeare leaves me cold, I want to be entertained, not be constantly solving a puzzle, for that's what all that ye olde language is to me - a puzzle.

I mean, I can understand it, eventually, if I stop and think, but I can't be arsed. The entertainment value does not equal the effort.

I agree with what others have said; comedies? What comedies? Now, I know times have changed, but how could that stuff have ever been considered amusing?
