Been using mums canon powershot a620 for the last 18 months and thought that was a decent little cam, left home and went to uni in september and just got my own camera
Its SO SO much better than the little powershot in everyway, i thought it would be harder to use but even the point and shoot is a million times faster. I'm over the moon with it
Think its time to get some proper photos tonight, no tripod as of yet although bought a 2GB sandisk extreme III to go with it

Couple of randoms from in my room this morning
All just point and shoot on 'program mode' (always use this so i can use center focus)
Press the outermost small button where you thumb should be, it let you choose focusing point. And dont use P anymore

Button doesnt work in full auto mode so ha lol yea, only works in program mode and as far as i can tell programs pretty much the same only you can choose focus mode and ISO
Either way, don't use program mode. It's just time wasted when you could be learning how to use the camera to the best possible effect.
If you can't be bothered fussing around with full manual, stick it onto aperture or shutter priority and figure out how to get the best pics in those settings. You'll find yourself progressing into full manual eventually.
And as for taking sample pics, get out of the house (if it's still light out).

Ah ok, thanks ibm. I know how to use the shutter/aperature priority but yep, need to get back into the habbit
Went out for a wonder tonight, didnt find much and even when i did no tripod meant blurred images
Wall, frient shoulder, max iso, holding breath, try those when you dont have tripo

yep carefully tried resting the side of the camera against a tree earlier (all that was available) and really didnt work
Looking at this seeing as its only 35cm long folded
I would suggest this tripods, heads, monopods, light stands, camera supports, lighting supports, professional tripod 055CL - CLASSIC TRIPOD
you only ever buy tripod once, buy something that last

Asda have a cheap tripod for £6.49, which I think is ideal as a stopgap until you can get one of others which cost quite a lot more ( 10x more... erk! )
I got one the other day and it holds my 5900 well and is 100% more stable than my shaky hands.
BenW, if you're new to SLR photography and manual control of things like aperture priority, take a look at (in particular Part 2 of) Enjoy! Digital SLR camera - it's an online guide that Canon made. When I got started their animated examples really helped me get my head around aperture/shutter speed/ISO and the effect each has, amongst other things.

With the tripod i really would like something compact, if its not compact im just not going to use it.
Dont have an asda hereis there anything cheap and worthwhile getting from sainsburys/tesco/jessops/currys/empiredirect/argos etc for the time being?
cheap tripods are a misconception. they wobble like an oap at a bus stop.
my advice is use the camera and learn how the settings work, the effects you can get, then when the time is right spend wisely on better lenses. good glass is second to none, the camera body can always be updated but invest in good glass and you'll hang onto it for ages. Also the professional lenses are built to last, metal rather than plastics and fast focusing and wide apertures, in short a pleasure to use and in the right hands able to get amazing results.
then pick a solid tripod. the manfrotto ones are very popular, a bit weighty but acceptable as a first time stable platform. also look at velbon and benbo...if you're feeling flush take a look at gitzo....
first though, learn how to use the camera and then plan what you want to do and what to get after that.
