Hoosiers @ Warwick Uni Fresher's Ball

Ok, so this was my first time shooting a gig - here goes:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/31266481@N02/

That one is b/w because the original was shot *exactly* the same moment that a purple spot turned on, and it was just washed out purple. If anyone can get proper colour out of it then i'd be intrigued as to how to do it but..

I was trying out the 50mm f/1.8 on my D40, so it's all manual thus pain in the arse trying to get it right in that sort of light, for instance:

I like what the effect was, but as you can see the top is either motion blurred or out of focus (probably a bit of both!).

Photo's are pretty much as original, with maybe a bit of tweaking in Lightroom (trying it out) and crops. Critique welcomed

Re: Hoosiers @ Warwick Uni Fresher's Ball

    Middle shot is great

Top shot.. has something funny going on with the stripes, like you've drawn a black line around them - USM/noise reduction problems?

Re: Hoosiers @ Warwick Uni Fresher's Ball

Probably because the original picture was washed out in purple, as mentioned

So it's probably a bit of over-enthusiastic noise reduction or something like that! Oh and it was shot in JPG rather than RAW.

Re: Hoosiers @ Warwick Uni Fresher's Ball

they look ok, but my take on the shots you have posted

#1 - looks like he's gong to munch the microphone, try not to get the singer when they've got their mouth full open, you might think that its great that they're wailing, but when it comes out in the photo, its like they're a microphone eating monster about to devour the mic.. (you can get away with it if its a dramatic pose)
#2 - microphone is obscuring his face
#3 - great lens flare, but means bugger all when the subject isn't in focus and isn't exposed..

not looked at the flick account (my net is slow today) looks like you were in a fixed posistion?

oh and you'll get better the more gigs you attend..

Re: Hoosiers @ Warwick Uni Fresher's Ball

Yeah front row, left. Shame about being fixed, but as you might understand it's a bit hard moving about without a photo pass (joined the Uni PhotoSoc who basically do all the union shoots, and they have a bit more flexibility)

And yep, that was my thoughts on number 3.

    That microphone was annoying

Still, i'm really pleased with how the lens coped with the light! That thing's a bargain at 40 quid

Yeah they're annoying little buggers. As are guitar heads when the guitarist chooses to stand RIGHT NEXT TO the lead singer and obscure their face, no matter WHERE you try to take the photo from. Grr.

Well done. I'd like to see a cropped version of 2 with just the left guitarist - I don't think the bassist adds anything to the overall image

Re: Hoosiers @ Warwick Uni Fresher's Ball

They were surprisingly good actually! I was only a fan of a couple of the songs, but they got the audience going quite well (even if the majority were shouting "MR A!" most of the way through the gaps) and it was a good laugh. They did a few new songs (one was the first time they'd played it the other hadn't even got a name - both were likely to end up in the chart and was a nice addition to what could have been a dull set) as well as a cover of "We didn't start the fire".

I'd see them again That said, front row was definitely worth it! Especially when Pendulum came on after
