    Optical Cable sugestions

hiya. im currently looking for an optical cable to connect my Logitech Z5500 5.1 Surround Speaker System to my Sony DVP-NS78 1080p dvd player.

    1. which make would you recommend? (ive heard of Ixos, Profigold and QED but are they any good?) does it have to be gold-plated, triple-coating,etc.?

    2. is optical "better" than a coxial cable?

    No. No. No.
Gold plated optical links are marketed at fools. Its sending LIGHT down that fibre, not an electrical signal.

No. They are both digital. It'll work or it wont.

However, optical is usually thinner / smaller than coax which can make it easier to route.

Just go for a half decent manufacturer, I paid about a tenner for a 3m optical lead, and it has been fine for the last 3 or so years. I think it was made by Hama.

so, wouyld you rather connect the Z5500 "directly" to any machine like in my (and your) case a freeview box and a PS3 or a DVD player rather than to the TV? is it much practical that way you think?

    Re: Optical Cable sugestions

Optical in my experience has been more fragile than coax. As said above, don't believe that expensive cables are better. As the cables are digital, they just send a series of 1s and 0s down the cable. How they expect you to believe that paying £100 for a cable can send 1s and 0s better than a £10 cable I don't know.

It's the same for my new HDMI cables that comet were trying to flog me for £50 and up, trying to tell me that cheaper cables can't display 1080p. Never spend more than £10 on a cable(unless it's for a longer cable).
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

    Re: Optical Cable sugestions

Optical and coax audo cables can have differences, but they are minute, and it down to the fact they are just transfering a stream of data, there isn't a lot of error checking in there. Ther is also no shared clock between the connected devices so you can get sync problems and jitter (where one clock isn't at exactly the right rate I believe).

This only really comes into play on high end equipment, you know, £5K CD Players, £5K amps and £10k speakers etc.

DVI/HDMI has a shared clock so isn't effected in this way.

I just used a optical lead I got for my PS2 many may years ago. It works for DTS, Dolby Digital streams from my Media PC

    No, this is another lie.

Two asyncronous clock signals, traveling at a measly few Khz, swinging out of line enough (think nyquest rule here).

its not going to happen. Its more bollocks of the HiFi LowEE brigade.
