DTS is better, slightly. I notice the difference in any of my dvds that have the extra soundtrack.

DTS is a competitor of Dolby Digital. It also offers a five channel plus low frequency effect channel, but it is not compatible with the Dolby Digital soundtrack. The marketing babble that comes out of DTS says that it uses a lower form of compression which gives you a better overall sound for your movies.
dts is at a higher bitrate and sends a hell of a lot more information to the back channels.
I find that the surround sound effect with DD5.1 is rather poor. dts creates a far better immersive feeling.
What bugs me is the number of DVDs that I released in North America with dts and then get released over here with only DD5.1. :(

Yep Dolby Digital's bit-rate is about 448KBPS. DTS is normally 768 and can go as high as 1.5MBPS. It's overall a much better, more powerful sound, I find. I'm not sure if I agree with the "far better surround sound than Dolby Digital" but it certainly sounds better in many cases. But can unfortunately sound worse in some cases as well, if not done properly :(
But I always enable it on all the DVDs where it's available :)
Ho hum, I knew DTS was better, just didn't know why. Gonne keep my eye out for DTS versions of films now, since I have the speakers and all.
Thanks for the info
