    Stepping Stones

    Artsy Fern Shot

    Thistle

    Shroooooms

    On top of Loughrigg

    Low clouds in the morning

    Rocks!

Line of clouds on Fairfield Horseshoe

    Mehhhhh

    Moss!

    Waterfall

    Another line of cloud

    A lonely style

    Mandatory barbed wire macro

    Waterfall 2

    It's a river of beer!

Comments, critique and if anyone is willing to crop these a little better i'd be much obliged

Quick critique ..... 'cos I'm cooking dinner. The barbed wire .... I'd try to dull down that white blur in the background, because it's distracting, and I'd want to lighten up the wire, because too much detail on the wire is lost. And, in my opinion, as the subject is the wire, you want to be able to see it and be distracted by the background. A simple adjustment with a couple of adjustment layers should do it.

    Re: Lake District!

    Hi there,

There are some good shots there, particularly the B&W shot with the barbed wire and the steps.

What I would advise to do in the future is work on your composition a bit. Try not to have the main focal point of the subject in the centre of the frame. Many people commonly use the 'rules of thirds' (subject point falls on a point which is 1/3 into the frame, try googling it) although this doesn't have be to stuck too.

Another good idea is to use 'leading lines' which can be an arrangement of areas that 'lead' you into looking at the main focal point of the photo.

You can crop to achieve a different composition too although I like to at least try it in-camera first.

Colour wise though they look great.

    Good work! Hope that helped

I love the shrooms and the stile. With the fern close up, you could crop it close and change the orientation to vertical - lose all the dead space

I'd say they were all pretty darned good. Love the waterfall, simple understated beauty.

    Re: Lake District!

    Cheers!

Composition is something i'm trying to work on, so i guess it's just practice. I've spent the last week taking pretty much all portraits of people so quite a lot of boring middle of the shot pictures.

I think the D40 handles colour pretty well! And the kit lens seems to be taking pretty good pictures, so i'm happy about that.

Need to get a new lens i think though. Ideally i'd like to get something like a 30-50mm prime (sigma does the 30 mil, and i believe nikon is supposed to be bringing out an AF-S prime soon) along with perhaps the Nikon 55-200mm VR for longer shots (along with maybe an extension tube if i really feel like it ). One thing i really want is a good fast indoor lens, since at the moment i'm having to use 1/50 or 60 at ISO 800-1600 at max aperture which isn't really that great for noise.
