    Tips for Shooting F1

    Hi all,

I'm off to Silverstone this weekend for the F1 and i was wondering if anyone could show me a few pointers or tips?

    I'm gonna be using a Olympus e520 with a 300mm.

I'm completely new to all of this photography business and i've kinda been shooting most things on auto mode.

I would like to get some nice shots such as blurred background and i understand that i need to reduce the shutter speed.

    Thanks
    Darren

    Re: Tips for Shooting F1

Not by much for f1 cars! They are bleeding quick.

Do an image search for f1 photos, look what shutter speed they were at and judge it accordingly - even 1/100s is slow enough for some blur at f1 speeds - which means you will be panning very quickly. So that's what I'd work on even without any cars: practise panning smoothly while squeezing off a shot.

Getting focus quickly enough will be a pain, as again the cars will be coming at and then away from you very quickly - it might be better to manually focus at the distance first, otherwise you are looking for slow corner exits to get shots.

It is doable though - I got a few passable ones with a P+S from testing a year or two ago.. but they were few and far between.

And get some really good ear plugs/defenders.

QFT - you seriously can't believe how loud these things are. Fine for about 10 minutes but the novelty of the audio assault soon wears off! I've only ever seen the cars at a test day, but even so that was bleeding noisy!

Thanks MaddAussie, i've got a couple of 4gb CF cards. That should do the trick as i'm a bit trigger happy! :-)

I'm gonna practice on the traffic later.

If you're in a grandstand you'll not be very popular with a 300mm lens... I'd just leave the camera at home and go and enjoy the racing.

If you're out and about behind the fence you'll be fine though.

Fair enough if it's that one. I had visions of the 2000kg+ ones most seem to take.

If it's this one he'll have it taken off him and then smashed over his head.

    Re: Tips for Shooting F1

I went to the Turkish GP this year, and took a lot of photos!
I ended up having maybe 20 ok ones.
Panning is sooo difficult I found. Even when i got the timing right in terms of where the car was, it was usually slightly blurred, I got a couple where the cars were sharp. I did find that I got better tho.

I was at the end of the straight leading upto turn 9. and there was a gap in the fence which i tried to shoot the cars at. I put my cam on manual focus so that it was focused at that point.
You've got to have a dream, if you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?

    Re: Tips for Shooting F1

id say you get 3 chances at grabbing a shot of a car as it passes..
F1 depending on where they are on the track 1/125-1/200

Thanks guys, it's the oly 300mm so it's not that big.

Had a few goes with the traffic last night and managed to get a good ratio. Obviously they weren't doing 180mph, but the good thing is the day starts with Formula BMW, GP2 etc, so i'll have some opportunity there to get practice.

Yeah we're in the Grandstand Pit straight, basically opposite the podium. But in the uncovered section.
