I have the Tokina 11-16 and it is great - if you buy from a company called onestop digital (based in Hong Kong) prices are below. I understand that the 12-24 is dead sharp as well - just a slightly 'slower' lens - and thats just over £300.

Unf none of the WA's are cheap

Presumably you'll want to be able to auto focus, so the sigma 10-20 is going to be your best/cheapest choice.
The Tokina 12-24 mk II is also good - less distortion, but more chromatic abberitions (coloured fringing). It's more expensive, and harder to find in stock (over here at least).
CAs are easier to correct in software, but out of the camera are more distracting than mild distortion.
Tokina 11-16 is out unless you want to manual focus.

Well I know not how to use them, but a quick google gave me an indication of price range
I'm more used to my Finepix S9600 & S100FS, just point & click I'd like to really get into photography seriously, but there always seem to be so many other things in the way, kids, work, traveling etc.
I shall indeed start a photography for n00bs Q&A thread when I get my D60 out of the box. Want to know something before I head out to Canada for the winter/spring.
Well yeah, but I thought I'd get a 'propa' camera to learn the basics. Not encumbered by a fixed lens & the quality 'should' be better. Well that's the theory anyways
Learn what f numbers & iso numbers are all about & what to use where & when, what lens is best for what applications, and all the other nitty-gritty stuff. I don't get time to go to classes or read books, to Hexus is the next best thing, all you knowledgeable peeps.
Is that because Nikon had a crazy moment and removed the auto focus motor from their low end cameras?
thats a shame, as the Tokina 11-16 is a fabulous lens. I really love mine. The Sigma 10-20 is more flexible and a little bit wider (1mm may not seem much, but it is 10%), but the fixed f2.8 is awesome.
really tempted to get the Tokina 16-50 and 50-135, both at 2.8.
