Free basic image manipulation software for Vista 64?

For many years (and by many I mean 9) I've been using a copy of Photoshop 6 that was bundled with an ancient Kodak digital camera. Can't find the disc now I've got a new computer.

I'm on Vista 64, and I need a simple proggy to crop and resize my digital photos, and sometimes to adjust the brightness/contrast. That's pretty much all I need, since I grew up with film and tend to compose carefully as a result. The ability to rotate photographs around an axis by a few degrees would be handy I suppose, because I don't always pack a spirit level, and I'm quite often drunk.

Anyway I downloaded Gimp 2.6.6 which looked promising, but it crashes immediately when I try to open the Brightness/Contrast adjustment.

If anyone has any free or very cheap alternatives for Vista 64 I'd appreciate it. Got a bunch of photos here I'd like to shrink down, tweak and post.

Try irfanview.

Irfanview has been my viewer of choice for years. Plus you could look at Picasa

That's odd. I run it on Window 7 x64 without problem (including brightness/contrast adjustment).

Try Paint.NET to www.getpaint.net I think it is Completely free.

Paint.net is good.

I find the interface a little odd at times, but then I'm used to Photoshop and only really use Paint.net on my laptop and work systems when i need a quick and dirty edit. it does load very fast and is responsive, especially on small files. I don't know how it would cope with complex adjustments or massive files.

I can vouch that it handles large files well Like you said though it's generally used for quick edits and touch ups etc.

Donwloaded the AMD64 installer- that doesn't work at all, won't even load. I have a core2duo but I assume they're the same?

Anyway cheers all, will try one of the alternatives mentioned.

Rave, try Paint.Net (as mentioned above).

Because its all written in .Net, it will be able to fully use your 64bit goodness.
