AV Amp Q - Component Video OUT through HDMI?

Quick one here chaps - I'm thinking of finally getting an AV receiver to link my HTPC/360/Wii into less of a mess, so have been breifly looking. Just have a question about Component inputs... If I wanted to connect my Wii to the receiver via component, can this video signal then be output through the single HDMI output?

I know that there is a D/A discrepancy, and that there would have to be some sort of conversion, but is this even possible and if so, is this a given on any harware with component input, or depends on the receiver itself?

Its not major, as worst, I can run the Wii video to the TV component input, and just the analogue audio to the receiver, but it would be nicer to run everything though one unit, so that I (And more importantly the wife ) only needs to worry about one input on the TV...

Sorry if this is a noob question, but any help would be appreciated

No the 820 does not upconvert (analog video input to HDMI output), you need to also connect via component from the amp to your TV (or the appropriate video output for any other connections you may have).

Thanks for that - hadnt quite got round to searching AV forums yet, though they would have been my next point of call... Well, thats what I thought really, which is a shame. In that link, the chap says to connect from the receiver to the TV via component, but wondering is there a reason why I would still run component video throught the receiver first? Instead of going direct to the TV?

As stated certain amps do and others don't. You have to make sure in the details that it will upconvert component to HDMI. The Denon AV1610 looks particuarly good!

if your TV has only got 1 set of component inputs and you have more than 2 things to connect, thats why.


as for menthels denon idea. the 1610 doesnt do analogue to HDMI conversion. the AVR 1910 and AVR 2310 do though. http://www.avreview.co.uk/news/article/mps/uan/2893

Onkyo 876's will allow all inputs to be output via a single HDMI cable - saves soo much clutter!

Doh - of course!!! may have a look at the denons, but tbh - I dont really want to spend loads, and I'm not necesarily an audiophile, I just like connectivity options... Will have a look at the denons though to see how they match up.

Odd, this paragraph from hifix seems to indicate it does:

Analogue video input signals (composite, S-video, component) are converted to digital video signals and transmitted to the HDMI output. Digital video signals are sent to HDMI output even when multiple HDMI devices such as a video camera or a games console are connected to the Denon AVR-1610. One HDMI cable is all that's needed to connect the AVR-1610 to a TV (monitor). You can also use the On-Screen Display to check the Denon AVR-1610's status.

edit: Ah, you have got confused between upconverting source and resolution. The 1610 does convert component to HDMI. The paragraph above is also taken from the denon literature. The £350 for the 1610 is £100 cheaper than the 1910 or something like the onkyo 607.

it was the upconvert to fullHD that threw me, the bit in the article i quoted saying about 'the later 2 models...' took it as the first one didn't. silly me
