I went with the BK Elec XLS200 Sub and the Mirage Nanosat Prestige 5 set:
    http://www.miragespeakers.com/na-en/...ge-5-overview/

They come with wall-mounts, and the centre has a rubber foot or wall-mount system depending on what your setup is..

I'm really happy with mine, and the price wasn't bad either - around £500

I've linked them into a Pioneer VSX-1018, which at the time was the best of the mid-range, so I'm sure they'd sound nice on your Denon

Good choice of sub and that prestige 5 set is not too shabby either, hope you enjoy them and let us know how you get on

I'm pleased with them, they can easily provide more than the room can handle (it's quite small), as I've set them up, they fill the room nicely.
The sub can be a little boomy where it's placed, but I've not really got much choice with the room layout - so I just run it at a slightly lower volume

Re: What speakers for Denon 2809?

Bit of a thread bump, this all got put on hold for a while (few expensive months here!) So, time again to look at the options:

What do we think of the Q-Acoustic 1010is?

    http://www.richersounds.com/product/...1010i-5.1-pack

Seem a rather good price? They got good reviews when they came out, but have been replaced by the 2000s?

Re: What speakers for Denon 2809?

They are supposed to be very good, for the same money Richer Sounds do an excellent Jamo set but I think they are hard to find now. They are supposed to be the better sounding bit of kit.

    http://www.richersounds.com/product/.../jamo-a102-blk

They certainly look nicer than the Q-Acoustics.

I would personally get the Kef Egg system though, whichever one falls into your budget. Great sound and I have never ever had a problem with anything made by Kef, quality products (mind you so are the Jamos).

What sort of budget are you looking at Dave?

I have recently got a set of the Mordaunt Short Alumni and have been quite impressed with them - they are not calibrated yet with the amp (Onkyo 607) as I am still busy redecorating in the room and want a new unit for the amp and front speakers to stand on, but out of the box they sound pretty good to me

Re: What speakers for Denon 2809?

Budget is fairly flexible - I'll spend whatever needs spending (within reason) to get the right sound.

That said, I'd rather not spend more than I have to - so the Q Acoustics at £299 seem a bit of a steal, but then if they're crap, I'd be wasting my money, and probably upgrade shortly after.

I intend to have some form of floating wall for at least the front speakers, so non floor standing would be good by me. As to the style orientated speakers, I have yet to hear any, but given that I'm going to be using them for a variety of sounds, would I be better off with traditional cabinet style speakers?

Have heard good things about the Mordaunt Short Alumnis, how do they fare in mixed use? i.e. movies, music, tv and the like? What is the sub like on them? They look good aswell, which I hate to say, but is a major plus

Oh, and I have got the option of 7.1 on my Amp, is it worth it? If I were going for that, I'd probably add some ceiling speakers for the rear, rather than having another set of speakers mounted to the wall - though this can come later..

Re: What speakers for Denon 2809?

I've gone down the Q-Acoustic route, for a more wholesome sound and one that is a little more multi faceted.

The Jamo A102s are what I used to have, they were amazing for the price and their size, they looked pretty snazzy too, but they lacked bass so were not great for music, every time I listened to music I got a headache from their treble heavy sound due to their small drivers, but don't get me wrong they were very good considering their asking price. Mine were paired with the Onkyo SR606 which is known to be a bright/harsh. Oh Jamo's don't use proper speaker terminations, they use a clever (but breakable - i heard about others breaking) push and close connection which works well but I can imagine doesn't provide a great connection when using a solid core speaker wire (I use lighting wire - solid core )

I bought two cheap 1000C (to use as zone 2 speakers) but considering their sound, clout and no need for a subwoofer (altho I will be when I set everything up again) they were amazing for the money. I have heard as part of the package the subwoofer is naff. My set up now comprises of 2 x 1030 Floor Standers, 1 x 1000C (centre) and 2 x QAV Rear Speakers (one thing I found out using the jamo is that very little sound ever comes out of the back, they are there for the environment and surround effect, so I was more than comfortable getting slimmer (wider) speakers that can be hidden on the coving to play the small noises, and let the front deal with the grunt!

    Hope that helps.

PS. If you are flexible with finances, why not go for the 2000 series, supposed to be a very welcome step up from the 1000 series and the subwoofer is supposed to be a better performer. I built mine in bits rather than buying a set, I am using my subwoofer from the jamo a102s as I thought it was pretty good, Subwoofers atm don't do much for me, they are just to shake the house down imo

PPS. I heard and almost bought some Mordant Shorts but I could never find enough information or comments from enough people with different pairings, and many people seemed to be upgrading. Canton make very good speakers (very well regarded) and do some nice small ones, tend to be slightly more expensive than Jamos though.

Re: What speakers for Denon 2809?

As I mentioned yesterday, I haven't had a chance to calibrate them yet with the amp as I am waiting for a new unit to put the amp, blu-ray, etc in but I have watched a couple of blu-rays including Star Trek XI, The Hurt Locker and you don't seem to lose any of the dialogue like I used to with my old all-in-one system - the centre channel appears to keep the voices nice and clear, the fronts provide a good enough sound for me and the rears keep the positional sounds quite well as I found watching Hurt Locker and hearing things whizzing past my ears

As for the sub, I will probably tweak the levels on it as well but you can feel the noise as well as hear it if you turn the sub volume control up too far (or is it not possible to have that turned up too far.....?)

Music - I have only listened to 1 CD via the blu-ray while I was busy working in another room but the sound does travel from them

TV - definitely better than the all-in-one system I had but I would guess that some of the quality of the sound will be limited by the quality of the output from the TV

The only thing I am not looking forward to with the speakers is keeping them clean due to the piano black finish on them.....

If you can I would suggest trying to listen to them as what suits me might not suit you but for my first proper separates system it will do me for a while (it will have to as I haven't got any money left...)

PS - Living room where they all sit is 4m x 4.5m if that is any help

Only really 2 things to add.

    1) Always buy 2nd hand speakers, do you really want to pay twice just for a unopened box?
    2) buy a oldskool rel subwoofer. Strata III etc. Much better than the modern 'tuned' crap.

What do we think of Accoustic Energy Aegis Evos?

Thinking two evo 3s, plus a centre, plus evo 1s for surrounds?

Re: What speakers for Denon 2809?

As the resident PMC fanboi I think it only right that I suggest looking for a second hand pair of original DB1's. Then get yourself a BK sub of suitable size for your room. Pick up a centre at a later date, and then put money assist for a nice pair of TB2's and put the DB1 as rears.
