    cheerio CMOS sensors

It appears that CMOS has it's days numbered now as the next thing they're trying to use is now Quantum film

So this means better images, higher resolutions from smaller devices and better light capture

    Re: cheerio CMOS sensors

When I saw a couple of headlines about this I was expecting the usual "in the next 5 to 10 years", but apparently they actually exist.

    http://www.dpreview.com/news/1003/10...uantumfilm.asp

The company says that only prototypes exist at present, with samples chips going into production in Q4 of 2010 and full production starting in 2011.

    Re: cheerio CMOS sensors

Yup they exist, and they'll be going into phone cameras which have completely different pre-requisites from DSLRs.

Mind you, we said the same thing about CMOS for a long time, but it made it in the end.

thing is though with higher res sensors we're already at the point where loads of lenses are being out-resolved. So the best thing for them to do would be redesign lenses with that in mind, I'm aware of a few manufacturers starting down this path, and slowly, though not all are...

Well lenses are starting to perform better wide open, which is the answer to this problem. (See olympus lenses - they nearly all perform at or close to their best wide open). Once you start stopping down then you're diffraction limited which isn't something single lens design can do anything about.

Of course, they might start making multi-lens/sensor combinations, like an insect eye, that gets around it..
