it took me 3 years to save for my monitors and tower sonic stands. Most of us, unless you're long-term unemployed and continue that way, could afford a couple of grand on speakers,if we're prepared to save for it and prioritise it over other things. But for most of us, we wouldn't. We'd spend it on other things

my last job (way back in 2001) i earned around £3600 for the 3 months i was there.
I am currently sat next to my £3600 B&W 600 seties + NAD T761 5.1 setup.
im also (very slowly) saving up for the NAD T775 to replace the 761. I have £35 out of just over £3000 saved
I'm long term unemployed, have spent a few grand on speakers (the only few grand i've ever earned) and I am prioritising the future purchases over everything else
Crikey, Stevie. I thought I used to be keen.
Well I have got a plan for my replacements already (although I think I may have to change the amplification choice as it may be a bit underpowered and 'polite' for my choice of speakers.
Speakers: Jamo Concert 11 (went for £2500 when new have seen 2nd hand sets for around £600)
CD Player: Cyrus CD8
Amplifier: Cyrus 8
Then maybe get some PSXR's on the bottom as well as the matching Cyrus Power 8's. Only problem is that the Jamo's are very insensitive so I may be looking elsewhere for amplification, along the Meridian lines or other such manufacturers. Naim I considered but again they are to laid back and polite for the speakers.
Any recommendations would be appreciated!
Shame about the Cyrus stuff in a way. I have always liked them and they appeal to the other half because of their size as well as the Hark rack that can be wall mounted.
I am using an XA200R and a pair of old Heybrooks still!! I think I need a pair of new speakers at some point!
I would go by the sound of the speakers not necessarily the price of them. If you are good at building stuff you could design and build your own pair of speakers.
Some of the older speaker cabinets designs are still quite solid and with modern drive units sound even better IMHO. I think a lot of modern designs are also influenced by aesthetics too.

I like the Heybrooks - had an old pair of Sextets that were nice.
Preferred them to the PMC's to be honest. Had a pair of TB2+ at one stage, but a slightly different sound to what I prefer. Listened to a couple of the floorstanders in the range and it was the same.
Horses for courses. I've definitely found that the biggest difference in sound quality has been down to speakers as opposed to source or amp.
I've got a pair of Heybrook Optima floorstanders too circa 1998. Not a bad sound on them really!!! Pretty impressively low bass for old cheapos too (good for DVD duties).

Oh yes
Rarer than rocking horse poo and hens teeth.
Ah! Oldies!!!! No + and No I man!!!
White!! !?!?!?!?!?
Well I gave up on the PMC's for now, will revisit them next year I think. The rest of my system isn't really "up" to them, so I recon I'll be upgradig the whole lot in 2011.
Picked up some Wharfedale Diamond 10.1's instead. Gotta admit for £199 I am seriously impressed!!!!

Yeah they're the originals, though truth be told I didn't hear a huge difference with my kit. Bare in mind I've used TB2 at work for 5 years or more, and recently had them upgraded to + versions... I didn't listen back to back mind so will do that when the 'old' ones arrive.
White? Custom built for a pro audio company who had them on loan for a while, and are now being sold off. There's a matching sub for sale too but alas I can't afford a TLE1 as well!
