    Urban Textures - Spain

Spent some time in Spain recently. Incredible place, especially around Cordoba and Granada, but I wasn't prepared for the incredible textures and graffiti.

My favourites. One of these days I'm going to visit all these places without kids in tow so I can spend real time taking pictures of these places.

Nice photography but wouldn't call the place incredible from these pics at least, looks like a wasteland... I'm reminded of urban exploration style photos, pretty cool on it's own but sad when a whole city is like that.

Looking through them I'm a bit 'mweh'. Far too many for starters, and too many different styles. Ditch the ultra-thin DoF ones, they look like a 'my first DoF experiment' gallery. The square on doorways I can see something happening with - maybe you could put 8 of them together in a single frame?

They're all sharp and decently exposed, I'm just not drawn in!

Brammers - must admit that more and more often I'm not impressed by the shots, and feel that they're - to one of your previous points - very snapshotty. However, I'll say that any complaint on too many different styles sounds like someone who just doesn't have a lot of fun taking photographs - I enjoy experimenting and as a result end up with a variety of different pics.

It's a point on the depth of field, but again, it's a good - no, a great - way to draw focus on a particular point of focus, and although the sheer number of pics make it look (as you say) like a 'first DoF experiment gallery', the individual shots I believe are at times very striking.

    Re: Urban Textures - Spain

Again I like the colour and texturing of some of these quite a lot, but not the thin DoF ones

Also there are too many that are similar - it stretches the eye's attentiveness a little. It might work to have one large central shot and then some of the others as small examples/details rather than presenting so many in all the same format.

No. It's just that presenting a real hodge-podge often doesn't flow, especially when you just line up 20 odd shots down a page. That's why I suggested you take some of those in a similar style and put them together - right now I'm bombarded by a load of shots and it's hard to take it all in.

Well, yes, DoF draws attention to what you've placed in focus (and sometimes what's out of focus actually) - so what are you drawing attention to in this shot for example?

Why is that smidgen of wall of interest? What are you trying to say by hiding the rest of the wall? What was your thought process on focusing on a milimetre of wall? Here's a shot with a similar use of DoF:

There I can see exactly why he's focused on that bit of wall - yours I just don't know why.

How did the uni interview go by the way?
I was laughed out the building. Apparantly I take 'technically proficient pretty pictures' and my silk scrolls were 'interesting technical exercises'. She pointed me towards a couple of more editorial orientated places, and told me never to set foot in an art school again Next time I'll wear a beret

No, you just need a couple of very narrow DoF pictures with abstract qualities but without any real meaning....they'd have embraced you like family

Yeah - you're right. It's a shame, because I went on a tour of the other parts of the college beforehand and I loved some of the painting that I was seeing, but the photography department... well let's just say we were incompatible. I won't name names who aren't here to defend themselves, but much of the work by the tutors wasn't even taken by them - they actually gave the cameras to the portrait subjects and just edited the results. Definately more on the art side than the photography side. However, even if she didn't say anything useful about my pictures (not from my point of view anyway), she did give some good commentary on how to present a portfolio and other bits and bobs.

Cordoba is a fantastic place. I happened across it it late last year while driving through Spain, and would love to go back. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a number of Roman, Visigoth, Muslim and Christian buildings including a Mosque turned Cathedral. Really quite stunning.
