The NS1000 have two modes of operation - noise cancellation on and noise cancellation off. With noise cancellation on they are meant to be easier to drive.

However,if you get a Filo e5 amplifier for under £20 it is supposed to improve the sound quality with noise cancellation off:

Audio-Technica also make nice headphones and cartridges.

As suggested by TooNice listening to the headphones beforehand is important but remember that demo samples will have been broken in. As a result a brand new pair of the same headphones will not sound the same out of the box.

TBH,I still think that a £100+ pair of headphones is wasted if you are only using the integrated sound card on your laptop.

i was in comet yesterday and while i was there i had a demo of the beats by dr dre studio edition headphones and i was really impressed, really good quality sound - a bit pricey and a bit plasticy looking but great sounding.

any recommendations for some top quality headphones?
i will be using them from watching movies, playing pc games and listening to music from both my laptop and my mobile phone.

    thanks in advance

    Hi Sp3n,

As it appears that you are a fan of the sound quality that the Monster Beats by Dr Dre headphones offer, but aren’t so keen on the appearance , you may wish to consider something like the Bose QC3 or QC15.

Both models will provide a very similar sound quality to the Dr Dre models, with the only noticeable difference the actual look of the headphones themselves (independent reviews of both models can also be found on-line).

    Hope this info helps!

    Thanks

    Matt from Comet

i plan on ordering some headphones today, but i am just a bit torn between the ATH M50 and the ATH a700

anyone have either of these and has an opinion that might sway me either way? as long as its about the sound quality and not the appearence

    thanks

Re: looking for some amazing headphones

I can't be of much help as I've never heard the M50. Try Googling: site:head-fi.org ATH-A700 vs M50

I glanced through some of the comments and it seems to be that from a sound perspective, the biggest difference is that the M50 has better mids and more bass, whereas the A700 a wider sound stage. The M50 is also more portable, whilst the A700 possibly more comfortable.

On one hand, I am an air head (contrast with basshead), I like my sound airy, my sound stage wide, so I'd probably lean A700. On the other hand, at a glance it seems that there are more posters who prefer the M50 than vice-versa. Not sure if it's just a different taste, or if the M50 is overall better.
