A bit of thread necromancy here.
I bought my Kindle and have been using it for over 6 months. I love it! It was particularly handy when we went on holiday (Med cruise). I took a one-month subscription to the Daily Mail so was able to read the news every day, downloaded via the ships wireless system. And of course not having to lug paper books around was just excellent.
I was initially concerned about leaving the Kindle lying around but I soon became very relaxed and now I just don't worry about it.
TBH, so many people have them now that they're not worth nicking. On a recent holiday, probable 7 out of 10 had some sort of e-reader...
I bought both my girlfriend and my dad one for Christmas.. neither have put it down even after being told previously "I would never use one of them, I like real books"!
Defo recommend, and as said previous, with them being so common now they aren't on the high profile list to be stolen.. yet do take care!
The new Kindle Fire looks like an interesting product, and has an unlocked/unlockable bootloader so u can flash custom android roms too
I love my Kindle but I really wished they would release the DX one here in the UK so i could use it for study books.
Aparently Amazon will ship it to the UK, you just have to order it from the US site.
The only grumble I've got with the Kindle is that PDF reading is incredibly tedious - formatting can be all over the place.
Apart from that, it's one of the best pieces of tech I have (certainly the most used anyway).
Kindle fire is an awsome piece!
No I don't believe it has any security - I think you could only download books with it, but nonetheless that could still be a big bill.
my wife and I have a kindle each and share the accounts and many books - you are not obliged to store them all on each kindle.
The management app isn't bad -though missing a few items I'd for instance like an export facility so I can keep an off-line list to stop be buying books in different formats a 2nd time!
the only real issue I have with it is that I can't have one device with all my books on it (e'g' not DRM'd google books or DRM'd Waterstone books) The Kobo add implied you could read the books on all devices - but I thing they meant nearly everything except a kindle...
In the short term that's not a big deal - but sooner or later I imagine Amazon will get such market share that both punters and authors will get squeezed...
Well, you can .... but not legally. Not in the UK, anyway.
It is possible to strip the DRM from DRM-books. If you've bought the books originally, I think a moral case can be made for that, but it's not legal, so we won't discuss how to do it on HEXUS. Or, for that matter, I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to find versions with the DRM already removed.
And there is certainly software that will then allow you to manage your non-DRM'd material on a PC, such as Calibre, for instance, and just load it onto the device(s) you want it on, when you want it.
Actually, this just reminded me. Has anyone had any issues using the Kindle on WiFi? I've got the last one with the keyboard, thankfully a 3G, but it just will not connect to my network.
It always says that the key is wrong, even though it's right. I've not worried too much since the 3G is good, but it would be nice to get it sorted.
I've had no problems so far, but I rarely switch it on. Last time I switched it on, it connected to wifi at work, and I don't even remember setting that up!
Mine's always on and I never have any probs with my network.
