codec pack for windows media center?

I used to use shark codec pack but its crap and full of spyware, all i want to do it play mkv (mainly) with optical pass through so the reciever can decode the dts/dolby etc.

spent hours with sharks codecs this morning and got it working once then it decided to stop passing the signal direct to optical and passed it as pcm instead.

    so, any suggestions ?

its a nvidia 9400 chipset, not the latest but whould work ok.

running combo of hdmi and optical.

I did this myself on my old HTPC with nothing more than Haali MKV Splitter and ffdshow.

No need for bloated codec packs.

    Couldn't agree with this more.

Having set up MCE more times than I can remember (most of the family has a W7 MCE as their main TV source), codec packs should really be avoided. It only takes one of the gits to screw up and the problems are endless (not helped by Windows poor management of codecs).

If you have some obsecure stuff and really need one - Shark 007 is the only one worth looking at IMO due to the way it is setup. The configuration tool is also very handy for MCE systems.

I've seen many issues with CCCP and MCE and I wouldn't recommend it (sorry Chuck).

Edit - Reread and saw what you said about Shark....that's weird. Have you downloaded it from the official source? It was wide regarded as the 'best' pack in the MCE community for a very long time. Granted, it's been a while since I've installed it, but it was certainly Spyware free previously.

Yes, but you won't like it

Like most codec packs - avoid and use FFDShow ect. where needed.

    .
Kaspersky has a huge number of false positives though, so does it actually contain a virus, or is it just the big K being over the top again?
didn't know about the Bing bag though, that's annoying

Re: codec pack for windows media center?

it force installs bing bar and i think its something to do with ask.com but i dont allow that when kaspersky pops up about it.

it lets u opt out of weatherbug.

Re: codec pack for windows media center?

ask.com and weatherbug are optional. You can stop bing with Shark's own solution:

    http://shark007.net/forum/Thread-So-...11444#pid11444

To be fair, none of it's malicious but I do think force installing bing is bad. Personally I quite like his work tho..

shame he cant offer opt out instead of screwing you over with it as such.

anyway, sorted it all now, it was the try pcm 1st option on bypass mode tripping it up!

Re: codec pack for windows media center?

You never need a codec pack. My helpdesk colleagues at work sometimes install K-Lite - it's very annoying and I uninstall it whenever I find it. VLC is all you need for a desktop.

The only additional codec installed on my sister & mother's HTPC is CoreAVC for x264, which is very cheap.

Been using Shark for the last few years, haven't had any spyware or force installs but to be honest, I haven't updated it in around 3 months.

Never once had a problem with it mind you, plays everything I throw at it.

Kaspersky once detected Nero as dodgy because it contained an optional toolbar installation of some kind.

I only remember because I was posting up HJT logs on a security forum, and some arse (administrator) noticed I had a torrent client, noticed the Nero detection, and then started accusing me of being a serial pirate. And then I stopped posting there. Anyway, back on track
