Looking for a good 2.1 setup

I've decided to upgrade my current PC spec and think I need to upgrade my speakers as well, just to liven things up a bit.

I've currently got a set of Logitech X530s, they're alright for the £45 they cost, but they're a huge 5.1 setup which I just don't have room for anymore (currently running in a 2.1 config) so I need to downsize and upgrade at the same time.

    I'm setting aside £150 - £200 for these speakers.

I like to listen to a wide variety of music and play a lot of games in my spare time, so I'm willing to pay the extra £50 if the speakers are worth it.

Preferably the speakers will be black and include a decent sub.

Thanks for any advice anyone's willing to offer

Re: Looking for a good 2.1 setup

When I had the same predicament (but a much more crappy 5.1 system) I bought Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1 speakers and they're very good except for two things:

-The single volume control brings the left speaker in first, then the right one to match it so you can end up with an audio imbalance unless you've got it quite loud. To that end, I've set it to a certain volume and don't move it because of the second problem. I'd expected it to control them both equally from the moment I touched it :/

-I've read that even when you switch the speakers off, the current to them does not shut off. To do that, you have to turn off the plug (or remove it) so I do that every evening.

These are two issues which probably would have persuaded me to go with a different set of speakers even though sound quality is excellent.

+1 for the Headphones, since the birth of our first child I've been playing CoD/DeadSpace 2 with a set of Sony MDVR Wi-Fi headphones.

Absolutely cracking range, good battery life, superb sound quality and you can easily back to back a few films without noticing you're wearing them.

Downside? You look a tool wearing them (having said that I usually look like one anyhoo)

I have a pair of Monster Beats by Dr Dre Solo HD's so I'm already covered for decent headphones.

I'll be reading a good few reviews tonight and I'll develop a short list of 3 or 4 sets.

Re: Looking for a good 2.1 setup

I'd recommend you consider the Antec Soundscience Rockus 3D 2.1, which are at the low end of your budget at £150. Pretty good speakers and they have a 3D mode which is nice for gaming, and gives a bit more of a rounded cinematic surround sound in general.

Or if you can still find them (they're a bit old now), the Razer Mako THX comes highly recommended (they win an award in the linked review).

They're not too heavy on the bass yet they go nice and loud – but they are £250, so pushing over the budget a bit.
