    Subwoofer, repair or replace?

My Q Acoustics 1000Si subwoofer seems to have packed up. Checked its fuse but it still won't power up. No idea what's wrong with it and I don't know if it's worth repairing or whether my money would be better spent on getting a replacement?

If it's a replacement, any recommendations for a similarly spec'd and similarly sized unit please? My amp's an Onkyo TX-SR606 if that makes any difference. Not wanting anything that'd annoy the neighbours too much, just enough power for a bit of punch during a game/film/music session.

Budget-wise I'm flexible, would rather pay a bit extra for quality but don't want to be breaking the bank.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

The answer is 'it depends'. And the dependency is what is wrong with it, and how much it would cost to find out what is wrong with it, and how much a replacement unit would be.

If you are handy with a screwdriver, a quick internal inspection might show something, and if you have some electronics knowledge you might be able to narrow down the fault. But if you dankt, it might be worth getting an estimate for iinvestigation or see if the mfr offers a flat rate repair service.

    Re: Subwoofer, repair or replace?

I did take it apart and for a quick inspection. Nothing looked blown or out of the ordinary but then my electrical skills are severely lacking. Fine building PCs etc but wouldn't know what I'm doing diagnosing some random PCB.

If I've got to courier it anywhere, that's going to mount the costs a little too much I think. I also don't really want to replace it if I can get away with it - could be something simple after all - but if I have to, I'll be looking for a new one. Will have to collar a few locals, see if they know anyone handy.

Would just like a spell where everything worked for more than 5 minutes

    Re: Subwoofer, repair or replace?

Now you are a Mod, couldn't you command any local HeXites to come help ?

Personally - I'd disconnect the speaker unit, and very quickly flash a 1.5v battery over the terminals, a quick "click" might give u a clue as the whether the drive unit is blown or the amp. If you have a multimeter, you can measure the DC resistance of same, again, disconnected from the circuit first.
    Cheers, David

Don't think my new mod powers extend that far

I'll give that battery trick a go, thanks. Multimeter might take a little longer but I should be able to arrange one soon enough. Will post back when I've got some results.
