Lounge redecoration / system rebuild
Right - been redecorating with help from the Father in Law. :)
It's still a temporary measure and more of a 'test' decoration. The final aim is to build a 100mm false stud wall to encase the TV, but have it covered with fabric and filled with Rockwool to add another acoustically absorbent surface in the room. The brown wall was a test to see if having brown velvet would 'bring in' the room too much given it's a living room and not a dedicated space. I can't afford to do all this right now since the room would need re-plastering and I want a projector and screen to go in at the same time. That said for now I'm pretty pleased with the result, if anything the room looks wider now, which wasn't the expected result at all.
Firstly everything had to be put in the middle of the room and covered up. Two layers of plastic and one of cloth was used.

Started painting the coving and painted the corner a few times to get an idea of how brown the wall would be. The ceiling at this point hadn't been touched and made me realise what a state parts of this house have been left in before we moved in. It should be white and match the coving! The other wall at this point hadn't been touched either.

Other walls painted and drying, TV mounted on wall bracket and ceiling lights changed.

Backlight LED's mounted on TV, need to be refocused to minimise spillage.

The wife decided we needed new carpet so had to shift everything out (!!). However this gave me the chance to relay all the cabling properly in the underlay, so we set to work on that. Harry thought it would be a good opportunity to play cars hehe.

Because it's not being re-plastered the rear speakers need trunking to hide the cabling. It's a whole lot more apparent to the camera than the naked eye, so looks worse than it actually is.

Rear speaker brackets fitted back in place. They're extremely high only because the rear left position is unfortunately where a door is, so they have to be high to clear it safely.

Rear PMC DB1i remounted, but not angled to the listening position.

New carpet was then laid and then the subs and electronics in the cabinet were brought back into the room to start the rebuild.

Then the recabling began. I used to think it was pretty bad, but recently at work I had to cable up a recording studio which had 1200 connections...

Final work complete, PMC FB1i back in position, wall lights replaced and everything given a good clean and polish. :)

Re: Lounge redecoration / system rebuild
What colour is the wall? and what size is the TV? and what did you use to do the backlighting? florescent tubes?
It looks awesome man, dont worry im not going to copy you ;)
Re: Lounge redecoration / system rebuild
TV is a Panasonic G20B 50".
The wall colour is A0101H CT Matt. It's the closest I could get to the brown velvet that I intend to use when I do the room 'properly'.
Backlighting of the TV is done using simple LED strips from Costco. :)
Re: Lounge redecoration / system rebuild
2 points i feel the need to make about a false wall.
1,rockwool may prevent heat escaping and kill the telly
2, if you are going to cover said wall make a vent at the bottom and another at the top to allow cold air in and hot air out, no reason why you cant rockwool the rest so long as there is a 50" wide clear run to allow the air in and out!. the fabric may allow enough air through if you source suitable stuff?
Re: Lounge redecoration / system rebuild
Worry not, I wouldn't be daft enough to flush fit the TV in the wall without allowing sufficient ventilation. :)
Re: Lounge redecoration / system rebuild
why is there not a butter churn on the monolith?
Surely, it would be best to make butter while it shakes the house down ;)
Re: Lounge redecoration / system rebuild
Kung Fu Panda nearly managed that last night. Skadoosh = OMFG :)

Perfect excuse for an upgrade ;) To be honest though no matter how big a TV you get, within a week you'll see it as 'normal' and want something bigger. ;)
Re: Lounge redecoration / system rebuild
and that is why a Projector rocks
when it's too small you need a bigger WALL.. and that involves a new HOUSE :)
Re: Lounge redecoration / system rebuild
Was thinking of getting a new 42" TV, or a projector.
The only problem with a projector is that i hear its expensive when the bulbs go, and how good is the quality really? compared to a good TV?

depends what model you buy and what warranty it comes with...
Re: Lounge redecoration / system rebuild
depends mostly on your curtains... cos a Projector is useless with any light at all.
if it's a daytime TV... then a TV os best.
but for films in a home cinema... Projector rocks.
bulbs?
1000's of hours. and worth it anyway
(Zak on Sair's PC..sorry)

It depends on number of lumens your projector can kick out not curtains...
The one that GonZ0 liked to has >= 3000 hours of bulb life.

tbh the best way to describe that one is over 3 years as its best to call at the end of your warranty complaining of a dim image so i pop up with a new lamp and give it the once over ;)
