Ugh, best back up all my CDs :o/

Never thought I'd have to (or want to) make copies of my CDs, I like the idea of perusing my collection and picking one out to play - I seem to enjoy it more as it's more effort involved... just came to play my Enigma CD and the surface was tarnished so it makes my player upset trying to read it.

Luckily it seemed to clean up enough to be able to read it, and I'm now ripping it to get a backup, and I'm thinking I should do my entire collection.

Gonna take me weeks, good job I bought a bunch of DVD-R's recently, now I know what to use them for at least.

Real bummer is my Monty Python Sings CD has 2 tracks completely unreadable :(
And I know I'm so careful with my discs, and rarely have them out, this is such a pain in the neck.

Anyone come up with a decent way of making a 1-1 copy of a Copy Controlled EMI CD yet? Without drawing on it.

caged, rip it to FLAC, SHN or APE using a ripper setup that suports it, then burn those files back to a CD - it's not 1:1 granted, as it removes the copy protection, but the audio waveform is 1:1

which one is that caged? I bought the massive attack 100th window and that had a copy protection you could bypass by drawing round the outside of the cd. I was gonna put post-it notes round the outside so i could rip it ..... then i checked the lite-on website and the latest firmware enabled copying that protection..... i love my litey.... Not sure if we're talking about the same protection... but checking the latest fimware for yor optics is always a good idea. Or post it notes. ( just the sticky bit)


Paul i know what you mean...after i was buying another cd i already owned for about the 8th time... i just thought 'f*ck it i'm too clumsy' If i remember i had run over that particular cd with my wheelie chair :oops:

I ended up spending a good couple of weeks copying my cds onto my computer ( and i didnt know about CDDB for the first week!). Then i threw all the boxes away ( it hurt, but most of them were scratched, cracked broken and dusty, and put all the cds in a 400cd wallet. Now i have about 6300 mp3s taking just over 40gigs. and i make sure i have a backup on a separate HD!

for backing up, FLAC is a completely lossless format, much like WAV but with lower disk use. Ogg Vorbis or AAC will give better audio quality than MP3, if hard disk space matters.

and i stopped buying music cds when titles i wanted to buy (e.g. 100th window) stopped being available on cd, as opposed to corrupted non-cd cd-shaped rubbish.

They seem to have this kind of protection on them but I've yet to find a DRM CD that my LiteOn DVD rewriter hasn't been able to rip. I think the same should be true for most DVD-ROM drives.

EDIT: Just checked my 100th Window rip and all the tracks ripped fine.

I was more interested in keeping the exact track structure, as they run into each other gapless, and wondering if there was a way of extracting the raw tracks except the copy protected one.

I have a Plextor W161040A, Pioneer DVD-116, Liteon 24x CD-RW and an LG DVD reader at my disposal, as well as an old HP 4x CD-RW.

I assume I could also just rip to WAV and burn back onto a CD? What's your (Windows) burner of choice? Nero seems to have got all tellytubbified.

Ah, it's sorted now. Going to be using the LiteOn CD-RW, and extracting 1 WAV and a Cuesheet.

i'm not buying cds where i can't be assured that they'll rip, even if a few people are ok on certain brands (e.g. JVC in this case) of reader. and more than that, i'm not buying corrupted cds when they are SIGNIFICANTLY more prone to dying than regular cds - cds have a LOT of error correction data so most scratches can be ignored. corrupted cds write garbage to the error correction sectors to prevent non-approved devices which habitually cross-check this data (e.g. discmen, car stereos, computers) from reading. the result on, say, an early iMac is a machine killed stone dead & in need of out-of-warranty repair by apple, just for trying to listen to Celine Dion or whatever. i don't have an early model imac, but i can't be sure that i won't scratch my cd - and if i scratch a protected disc, then game over - no more cd. it can't recover the error as it has nothing to work on.

i am _NOT_ buying inferior product, especially when some people (e.g. topic starter) have enough difficulty with a regular cd.

Ah Nero v6. They turned it into 'My First CD Burner' program... that can be sorted tho.

On the first screen there are three 'buttons' at the bottom of the window (one is the exit button) One of them looks like two people, click it, this enables EXPERT MODE. Now chose the type of CD/DVD you wish to burn and instaed of the horrible interace you will get the classic nero window appear :D

Some of the buttons have slightly changed but not by that much.
