7.1 Headset Suggestions

Needing help picking a new reasonably priced surround headset as my G430 finally gave up after a good two years of service.
I was about to buy the same again when I stopped to consider if there were any better alternatives, hence I came here.
Any suggestions would be brilliant,

Dont waste your money, surround headphones dont work. Just grab a decent pair of Sennheisers.

The only *real* surround that works on headphones is "binaural". The trick is that it takes a small finite time for sound to reach our ears from a local source. the difference in time between that sound reaching our left and right ears is what our brain perceives as being spatially different. Its about 4 milliseconds between ears for a sound source roughly equating to a pair of well spaced stereo speakers. If you have multiple drivers in a headset with NO time delays, then its just adding more volume to the ear.

Spend your cash on a really good pair of cans like the DT880, Sennheiser HD 580/600 or similar.

7.1 headphones are just stereo headsets with crappy processing. As above, get yourself a good stereo headset and invest in a decent sound card that will do processing for anything.

You can get 5.1 surround headsets which have multiple speakers, these do a better job of it, but you need a sound card with analogue outputs to drive them.

Recently bought myself a pair of Hyper X Cloud 2, must admit i was very impressed with the build quality and sound quality, they use 53mm Drivers Neodymium Magnets which you don't normally find in their price bracket. They are stereo with virtual 7.1 but it sounds pretty convincing, i also own a pair of Roccat Kaves real 5.1s but found them far to heavy for a extended period of time.

Interesting about the Roccats, I was thinking of getting some of those as I now have a sprog to think about.

Well lets put it this way they actually put 3 indents in my head which you could feel and see they are that heavy. Luckily after not wearing them for a few years the dents have popped back out lol.

It does look like they have changed the design slightly on the newer XTD versions, i had like 3 seperate pads that were thin squares so focused the weight, the newer one seems to have a big sponge pad. Sound quality wise i found them very good and used them with my laptop for many years without issues.

Agreed, never had better sound that with a decent soundcard to drive my Senn HD595s. Grab a clip mic and get some decent dedicated headphones!
