Would a tablet like the Nexus 7 be "ideal"? That would be roughly £199 for the 16GB. If i buy those sleeves & case i would only spend a maximum of £50Economically i could save if i bring my Mac. But having a tablet is very portable.

Nexus 7 blew me away when I first got it.
Hey, I bought a Nexus 7 a while ago to go travelling around the world. It did it's job and worked great. I found from personal experience it had a good battery for that job, small enough to travel with and keep concealed when necessary. It was relatively cheap (£200) certainly cheaper than a macbook. I bought a USB connector and a memory card reader so I could sync photos (from my DSLR) via the Nexus as I go. So in summary I cant comment on which solution you should go for, but I can recommend the Nexus.
great posting thanks
Nexus 7 for my side
Plus one on the Nexus 7.
I have a decent 12.1" laptop, a Sony Xperia and a gaming desktop, yet the go to device in our household is the Nexus. It's pretty well constructed and lives inside a leather folio case so is almost impervious to damage, even in the hands of my 2 year old or shoved into a bag. For the money asked, you will not find a better spec device for general browsing, a bit of video and maybe some casual gaming. Battery life is excellent too.
It will be coming to Mallorca with me in August, something which the laptop most definitely will not.
