    Google cleanout knobbles IPhone/IPad

If my understanding of this: http://googleblog.blogspot.co.uk/201...-cleaning.html

Is that GMail won't have activesync, and so if you're one of those people like me who setup GMail on their ipad/iphone as an Exchange account (and in doing so got a calendar and contacts sync'd), will find it no longer be an option to setup after 30th Jan 2013.

Apologies if this has been reported elsewhere (a quick check showed nothing), or I misunderstood.

    Not really.

If you already have GoogleSync set up, it'll keep working exactly as it has. If you're setting up a new device, you can't use google sync, but you can use IMAP, CalDAV and CardDAV to do exactly the same thing - you'll just use a slightly different setup method. And if you've got a business service, you can keep using GoogleSync just like you always have.

Basically, they're just moving from a proprietary sync format to an open sync format, which is much more in keeping with Google's approach & ethos. And AFAICT (from the google blog, anyway) iOS native apps already support all three protocols.

    Hi Jim,
I agree (and think I mentioned that), that it's new setups only... though that may be a phone upgrade.

Here's the details on iOS and CardDav etc: http://support.google.com/mail/bin/a...answer=2753077

Not as clean as the Exchange setup (ie. you'll need to setup 3 different accounts, one for mail, one for contacts, one for calendar), but you're correct, possible.

    Re: Google cleanout knobbles IPhone/IPad

I imagine Apple could (although I don't think they will) very easily give you the option to input your google account details once then propagate that through all three apps. Although that would depend on them having sane account management in iOS, so maybe it's not as straightforward as I'd like to think...
