    Computer Speakers

At a bit of a loss here, been looking for decent PC speakers for a while. Feel rather spoiled by the home cinema kit in the other room and want my recently built PC to have a better system than the Creative DTS 2200 it currently has, which decides to change volume at whim. (did this on older pc too, so its not soundcard).

Anyways, Richer Sounds cant help me and there being a real lack of decent PC shops around these parts with demonstrable speakers, i need a little help in this area.

Looking for a 2.1 system, or even just good stereo speakers, willing to spend over £100 but don't want to if not necessary. Mainly for TV/Film but with games and music part of the deal.

    Any thoughts?

    Re: Computer Speakers

Would recommend a 2.0 bookshelf speaker setup but as you're after 2.1 something like the Creative T20 or T40 will do the job

Stereo amp and 2 good speakers.... Ebay is where I got some of my stuff and Freegle gave me the rest.

NAD, Pioneer, Denon, Marantz amps, KEF, MS, Tannoy speakers. Sub £100 easy

You find it, I (and our mutual friends) will tell you if it's any good.

    Re: Computer Speakers

Thats an interesting thought there Dave, was thinking space might be an issue, but can pop my PS3 on top of it i reckon.

Gives me something to look into over next few weeks, love this part of the upgrade process.

Have a vague idea, ask some questions, get a setup/solution in mind, investigate products, geek mode on!

5.1 could be purchased with future setups in mind, wish i had space for more floorstanders in this room, but its a no no hehe.

very surprised at the price of some of these, but most folks appear to want collection, rather than delivery, due to exorbitant costs i take it, might have to see if theres anything locally

    Re: Computer Speakers

I used to have Creative T40 speakers (until they died) and they're great for a 2.0 set but were lacking in bass (while still being much better than similarly sized speakers, they'd probably be ace as a 2.1 set). When they died I replaced them with these:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/micro...remote-control

They are a lot bigger (both the cones and the speaker boxes), a lot louder and have much better bass, they are perhaps lacking in a bit of mid / high but they still sound way better than the T40s to me without being overly B-A-S-S like most 2.1 sets tend to be. When I first got the speakers the volume control seemed a bit random but they seem to have settled down now / I seem to have gotten used to them. Mine seem to need to be on fairly loud to kick all the frequencies in - feels like the volume control electronics are doing a very bad job of cutting the levels in until you get to 'normal' listening levels (enough to mildly annoy the missus in my case). Almost like it decides to cut the bass more than the treble at low volume (perhaps intentional as bass travels through walls and floors more easily, but I suspect cheap electronics / a lack of QA effort considering the cost of them)

    Re: Computer Speakers

I have three setups, none of which I have piccies of, Ill list them though :

    Main 6.1 -
Marantz SR 5200 6.1 AV amp (ebay £42), Tannoy centre (new £100), MS50i fronts (ebay £50), Wharfedale Diamond 9 rears (boot sale, £15), JPW Monitor back (boot sale £5), fed from Virgin HD+ box, Samsung BluRay.

    Office -
Pioneer PM32 amp (Freegle - freebie), NAD 4020 Tuner (ebay £1 plus post !), Tannoy Saturn speakers (Freebies again) on decent stands, also fed from PC.

    Bedroom -
NAD 3020 amp (ebay £15), KEF UniQ speakers (AVF £30 ish), fed from iRiver MP3 player (oldie goldie was £200).

Mixture of cable, nowt flashy, most inters home made using Van Damme video cable which works surprisingly well.

    Re: Computer Speakers

    Dragging this thread up again

Bug has caught me again, mainly because current setup the speakers change volume a lot and considerably, getting seriously annoying.

Ok, so checking out Mobo, which is a Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H, appears to have optical out, so thinking of a Stereo amp with an optical in and a couple of bookshelf speakers, any suggestions welcome.

kinda toying with the idea of an AV amp, but thinking size is gonna be a real issue with that, place is cluttered enough atm

budget will stretch a bit further than originally considered too.

    looking at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wharfedale...item3384df931c

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Monitor-Au...item51b090ff4e

lost on the amp side of things tho.

    Re: Computer Speakers

Ive said it before and Ill just say it once more - low cost hifi amp and speakers is the way to go, unless you are space restricted.

Less than £100 gets you a 2nd hand NAD, Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood, Creek, Marantz etc amp, and a pair of Wharfedale Diamonds, KEF Codas, JPW Mini Monitors etc ...

    It's a no contest.
    Cheers, David
