Sky HD box - viewing recorded programs after cancelling subs

Hi, My wife's mother was recording GoT Series 3 for us, initially with a view to transferring to another HD for us to watch at home (we've got Virgin), but discovered this was a no-no. She (the MiL) has now gone to Talk Talk with YouView, so has offered to let us have the Sky box to plug in at ours and watch GoT. My question is, not that the subscription has ended, can we still play back stuff that she has recorded?

Edit: This is in no way an attempt to circumvent any DRM or get something for nothing, we just want to view a show that's already been recorded.

I'm pretty sure you can't. Same as if say you drop the movie package, recorded movies become unwatchable.

    I may be wrong though.

Yes I can verify this as it happened to me when I cancelled my sky subscription, still had old viewing card in but nope, couldn't watch anything at all that had been recorded, even stuff that had been recorded from BBC 1 etc

All functionality, other than being used as a basic Freesat box is disabled without a valid subscription.

You cannot time shift, pause, rewind, record or watch any previously recorded content.

Re: Sky HD box - viewing recorded programs after cancelling subs

I fell for that - I got a temporary Sports package to watch my nephew play in the Victory Shield and found I could no longer watch the matches I had recorded after the sports package expired, even though I still had a Sky subscription! Highly annoying.

BTW, I upgraded to HD recently, then remembered there are programmes recorded on my old SKY+ I want to keep/watch. Can I pull the HDD from the + box, stick it in a usb enclosure and plug it into the HD box via the USB port and watch/transfer them?

that wont work it will only allow unencrypted ftv programs to be watchable which can already be done through the box.
i had this problem a few months ago
sky have done everything they can to ensure this sort of thing doesnt happen =(

I'm not trying to extract the Sky encrypted files to watch elsewhere, I want to pull the files off my Sky+ box and play them on my new Sky HD box. Reading the blurb on the website suggests the software will do exactly that.

Are you saying that it cannot do that? That would be something of a disappointment.

Re: Sky HD box - viewing recorded programs after cancelling subs

    It should do.

The Sky boxes save the raw satellite data to the HDD, this then gets read back and decrypted at time of playback. As long as you can copy the satellite data streams i fail to see why it won't work....in fact the entire premise of the program is to allow you to port the HDD and/or data between boxes/HDDs.
