Android, Ipad, of Windows tablet for art?

My wife wants a tablet her main use would be for Art packages.

She would like to sketch, paint and some light photo editing.

Can anyone recommend the best option?

    We were looking at:

    Ipad Air

    Asus Slate

    Google Nexus 10

    Samsung galaxy note 10.1

    Any help appreciated!
    Thank You

You might want to look at this the other way round. Which art application(s) would she want to use, and then look to see which platforms support it.

Well, purely for flexibility, I'd say the Windows tablet (obviously make sure it's not running RT).

Failing that, an iPad. Android tablets tend to have mysterious laggy moments on occasion, which could prove rather irritating for an artist.

    Thanks Guys!

I think I need to take a closer look at the windows tabs.

Anyone ever done a dual boot with a tablet?

None of them. Seriously. Tablets are not at the stage where they are suitable for any serious level of art. Reasons vary from screen size / resolution, right through to the type of stylus (if any) input.

It's the wrong tool for the job.

Although I am in the Android camp, the latest iPad does have probably one of the fastest SOCs out there, although it still only has a 1GB of RAM(however iOS is lighter IIRC),and I get the impression image editing and graphics applications seem to be better supported ATM on iOS.

There has been some fantastic art made on iPads though:

    http://www.iceflowstudios.com/2013/i...-kyle-lambert/

It was made using this package:

    http://www.procreate.si/

Also, with BT being released there are now X86 Windows 8.1 tablets at decent prices like the Asus T100,meaning the full gamut of standard windows image editing applications can be run. However, screen resolution is much lower than that found on the iPads and Nexus tablets.

If not a tablet, what would you recommend for someone that is serious about art ?

The Wacom Cintiq springs to mind, or the Wacom Intuos if an integrated display isn't important. These need to be plugged in to a computer though.

reading through the yogscast stuff, their main artist (who did a 6 hour livestream with one) was using a Wacom Cintiq,
so if its good enough for them..

    edit: forgot the link http://www.reddit.com/r/Yogscast/com...ed_during_the/

Re: Android, Ipad, of Windows tablet for art?

Input tablets (as opposed to tablet computers) have already ben mentioned, but if this is serious artwork, you might want to look at the complete Wacom range:

    http://uk.shop.wacom.eu/products/intuos

The pro version is the higher resolution equipment, but whether you use the standard or pro versions, you are putting yourself firmly into either Windows or OSX territory - and a laptop if you want portability.

You also need to consider the software - and as this could prove to be a major investment, your budget - but it depends how serious you tare. And having produced the artwork, are you going to print it/ If so, yourself (so you'll need to think about a printer that will do justice to it, or if a print house, you need software that will export your images in a format compatible with a print house.

BUT - this is escalating way up from simple sketches on a hand held tablet computer - is this professional, a hobby or a first step?

What's your budget, its basically the Surface Pro 2 is the best bet, by far. See Penny Arcades' Gabe on the matter.

Update, I've just seen the new Wacom Cintiq companion, basically a 13" 1080p IPS tablet computer with a Cintiq built in. There is an Intel i7 Win 8 and NV Tegra 4 "hybrid" version.

Looks awesome, if only I had artistic skills...
