    Marantz MCR510 Bundle

I'll be spending a lot of time in my home office in the near future so i wanted a decent sound system in here. I dont want to take up too much space with a full AV system and i have all my media available on the network so it made sense to go with one of the fancy micro systems. After a bit of casual looking around, I went for this bundle with RicherSounds.

    http://www.richersounds.com/package/...eals/pah011413

The Marantz MCR510 doesnt have a lot of reviews out for but it' shares the same internals as the MCR610 (Which does quite well in reviews) just without the DAB and CD player, neither things i have much desire for. The only other feature you lose that bugs me a bit is the bi-wire option... but that shouldn't impact things too much (right?) The MCR610 is around about £450 and this model, is around £250. No brainer really.

The Monitor Audio BX2 speakers again, have quite favourable reviews and seem to be £250 new.

So overall i have paid under £400 for something that would have cost me £500 if bought separately. I don't usually purchase speakers without listening to them, but this time im taking a punt!

I didn't think this was good enough to go in the 'deals' forum, but thought people might be interested.

    Re: Marantz MCR510 Bundle

This might be a very short Marantz appreciation thread, but I got the MCR610, and it's brilliant! Paired it with Mission MX3's, bi-wired. The Marantz steamers play everything, and if you get the black shiny one, elegant!

    Re: Marantz MCR510 Bundle

I was under the impression Marantz was widely regarded as a solid make? My (admittedly limited) experience with them has been very good!

Either way, i will of course report back on my findings when everything arrives

Im currently formulating a way to make some desktop mounts for them to isolate them a little bit. Don't see the point in spending a lot of money!

One old trick is to just use blobs of blue-tak, which provides good sonic isolation for speakers on surfaces like desks or shelves. Not very aesthetic perhaps, but definitely cheap & effective!

    Re: Marantz MCR510 Bundle

I had a Cambridge Audio streamer before. The Marantz is in a different league(within that price range). It just does simple things, like if one internet station stops,it simply, after a while moves on to the next in your preference list. It also has an out for seperate sub woofer. I bought the one with the CD, don't know why, obsolete crap!

    Re: Marantz MCR510 Bundle

    Its arrived!

Apologies for the blurry photos, i should be working so i was rushing a bit!

I was quite surprised at how big these speakers are

Time to prepare the old speaker cable! Trip the oxidised ends off, strip 'em, twist 'em, snip the ends off.

I switched the gold plated birewire plate round to the inside of the terminals so that the shield on the cable held it in place better.

Need to tidy up the calbes in this area a bit, still lots of slack on the speaker cable whilst i experiment with the position.

    Hello to you too!

I havent experimented with the various amp features too much yet but it seems fairly straight forward. First thing it did was automatically connect to my network and update itself.

Listening to some chilled out house/breaks at the moment from my MBP on the analogue aux in and even without putting these speakers into a decent position and isolating them, they sound incredible. For straight out the box sound im quite surprised how open and loose the sound is.

They definitely need isolating and pulling away from the wall though!

    Any suggestions?

I don't think I've ever read a bad review of Monitor Audio speakers, so I'd expect them to be good

Marantz have a great reputation too. The only thing that'd put me off is the small display. I'm tempted to get something like this for my bedroom, but I don't think I'd be able to read the display from my bed!

The display is actually very very clear and bigger than it appears. Without knowing the condition of your eyes i cant truly comment on if you would be able to see it, but it has quite an impressive resolution.

Standing at the opposite side of this room, which is about 3M, i can still read it no problem.

Although i haven't tested it yet, it can be controlled from an Android/iPhone app.

Hmm...even more tempted now! The smartphone control is very cool too, as long as the App works well

    Re: Marantz MCR510 Bundle

I just slapped on some Bonobo and whoaaaahhhhhh these things have really come to life.

The thing i love about Bonobo (Check out his Soundcloud) is you can get a really wide range of music styles all within a single song. Mostly its Electronic Soul/Funk but some tracks are a bit hip hop, some trip hop and often a lot of Jazz.
These speakers seem to have handled it with all with grace.
