COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNN) -- A gunman opened fire Wednesday night during a heavy metal concert in Columbus, killing four people -- including at least one member of the band -- and critically wounding at least two others before a police officer shot and killed him, according to Columbus police.

The attacker leapt onstage as the group, Damageplan, performed, and began "targeting members in the band," Sgt. Brent Mull said.

Two others were injured in the incident, although the nature of their injuries was not clear.

According to eyewitness accounts, the gunman initially shot and killed the band's guitarist, Dimebag Darrell. Darrell, 38, and his brother, Vinnie Paul, 40, are former members of Pantera -- a group they formed in the 1980s. Their father is Jerry Abbott, a country and western songwriter and producer.

Im totally gutted as a musician (and a fan)

Dimebag remains my guitar idol (for lack of a better term). Listening to Vulgar Display of Power made me go out and buy my first ever guitar. I wanted to be as good as Dime and be able to create as expressive a guitar solo as that guy.

Times have changed and I listen to a much more broad range of music which influences my writing & playing, but everytime I slam in a Pantera CD, those wailing solos & immense riffs... still get me like they did the first time I heard them. It tooks me months to nail the solo to Cemetary Gates and I can still play every note.

RIP DBD. Im sure Im one of thousands who took up the instrument because of the quality & attitude in your playing.

cant belive it happened, i thought it was a joke when my mate first said it, really sad day for metal fans around the world, he was a genius on his guitar, as you said, an imspiration, probably to millions

really sucks.....bad......not, what would possess an idiot like that to kill someone like that???? he ever took out random people in the crown for no reason the cretin

apprently vinne paul was shot too, and hes critial, but at least hes alive i guess the tour managers dead and a few innocent people

completly gutted, Dime was one my all time favourite guitarists, he was an incredibly talented musician, an awful shame he went the way he did. You will be sadly missed Dime by myself and the entire metal community, RIP.

My heart goes out to his brother and the rest of his family.

A sad day for metal today

Someone mentioned this in the pub earlier but no-one knew which member had been shot.....found out half an hour later and was stunned. The guy was incredible, he was hands down one of the best guitarists on tour today.

Pantera was one of the main reasons I got into playing the guitar.....respect shall be payed, vulgar display of power is now going in the cd player......
